I have a friend who really likes anime (for his birthday last week we went to 2 different anime themed stores) And I recently finished watching Modoka Magica (available in Japanese with subs on Hulu for the Americans on this site, I don't know of a legal way for people in other nations to watch it for free, but if you do please post) and I asked my friend to give it a shot, he watched 5 min and said, "No, I refuse to watch anything that is lolicon." I tried to convince him that it is so much more than what it portrays itself in episode 1, but he still refuses.

Can someone lend me a hand, any ideas on how to convince him to see it?

Tell him it is not lolicon.

He will say it is lolicon.

Ask him why.

He will say why it is lolicon.

He will be wrong.

Tell him he is wrong.

Show him either this scene
Or this one
If all else fails slap him and call him crazy. I'd pick this option.

You might want to reconsider the titles of those spoiler-tags. Right now, they are spoilers themselves.

Guh fine
Jeez, you should expect spoilers the instant you search up anything related to anything.

I'm sorry, he probably won't watch. He's rejected it even before watching it. Some people just don't want to try new things. That's said, maybe you could show other people. I'm a big Madoka Magica fan, so I hope you're successful.

I had a similar view before I watched it. I normally can't stand anything that Moe or anything Magical Girl. Thankfully my "watch at least 3 episodes" rule paid off. For a given value of paid off of course, I think a part of my soul died.

It's probably too late now.

He's predisposed to not watch it, and he's only going to find reasons he doesn't like it even if he does decide to watch it as a result of your persuasion.

Let it be.

Wait for culture to prove you right, and open his mind. I had a friend who refused to watch One Piece, and no one bugged him to do it, and eventually he got curious after seeing so many internet references to it and chose to watch it himself. I never watched MLPony, but who knows? If culture manages to convince me that there's value in it that outweighs the shame I'll feel from society should it know, I probably will. Madoka has a similar problem.

I was really worried this was going to be an overwhelming review/criticism/rage thread. But thank god.

This is what I have to say. If your friend has such a silly undefined (not to mention unfounded) reason for not wanting to watch it, he's not going budge unless he moves himself (which is not entirely out of possibility).

...I hate to break it to you but your friend is probably a closet lolicon.

Ever heard the saying "The lady doth protest too much, methinks."

Nothing wrong with being a lolicon if he restricts it to 2D.

You can try telling him that it's the second best anime of the year, only because Lolicons downvoted it. Who cares if it's true or not. Just make him get to episode 3 and he'll be hooked.

I quite liked the concept behind Madoka Magica, and I think for the most part it was well executed. I also liked the art style and the pastel colours in the scenery and the witch's worlds. However, the exaggerated cutesy-ness and awkward sexualisation of young girls did significantly dampen my enjoyment. It didn't manage to completely ruin it for me but it came fairly close. If your friend doesn't want to watch that stuff then he doesn't want to watch it. It's no big deal.

So once he busts out the 3d modeling software, it's all gone to hell?

That's all I've got.
*blink* Please tell me you intended that to sound as wrong as it does, especially given lolicon being involved.

I was kidding. And I know it's not lolicon, being a huge Madoka fan.

I've read the manga, but I haven't gotten around to watching the anime yet.
I'm in the same boat as the guy before, I didn't expect it to be what it was.
And part of my soul died.

Also, I've heard the manga is differemt from the anime ending wise.
Can anybody back that up?
