I've read the manga, but I haven't gotten around to watching the anime yet.
I'm in the same boat as the guy before, I didn't expect it to be what it was.
And part of my soul died.

Also, I've heard the manga is differemt from the anime ending wise.
Can anybody back that up?
The anime came before the manga, first of all.
And really, the manga is basically an abridged version of the anime. Differences between the two is that the manga is bloodier, Kyubey has facial expressions, the art and some designs are different, like Homura's shield and Sayaka's sword, and there are a few scenes and details cut out. The ending in both are pretty much the same, except for a few alternate tweaks, and again, the anime adds a few more scenes and details. The manga do have some neat ideas, thought, like the fight with Walpurgis Night where it summons evil replicas of Sayaka, Kyouko, and Mami to fight Homura. Both share the same story, but overall, the manga is just a weaker version of the anime

Not the best thing to say in a topic regarding lolicon...

OT: Unless you can be particularly persuasive, write him off as a lost cause.

However, the exaggerated cutesy-ness and awkward sexualisation of young girls did significantly dampen my enjoyment.
No idea what's sexualised about this:

No idea at all.

I've watched about half of the first season myself. I don't really like animes at all, and have been watching this on a friend's recommendation as well. Honestly, I had to power through the first episode as well- it does a crap job of starting the series, and you just have to bear with it.

Madoka, lolicon? Hooooo boy, I'd say unlike most 13-parters I know, this one wasted absolutely no time in having stuff get damn serious and sinister. Sadly rather predictable a lot of the time, the resolution seemed too convoluted to me, I'd have pulled it a lot more simply *laughs*

But, most definitely not lolicon, and most definitely yes, a good watch.

That's a damn shame. I absolutely loved Madoka Magica.

-If you want to spoil a bit of the fun for him, you could always try to explain that it's a dark subversion of magical girl/moe anime.

-You could go the route I did with one of my friends and use the

"I'm your friend, you have to trust me on this one. 3 episodes in you'll understand"

card.

-You could also, if you're not against spoiling some of the fun again, explain that whatever he's expecting from the first episode is exactly what they *want* him to expect, and that it all gets torn out from under him.

After doing a google image search, I just want to say that it kinda looks like Lolicon.

It only does the downplayed sexualization as a reference to other magical girl shows.

The main body of the anime is excellent, deep, and well-written, with the lolicon stuff being completely shelved once the show reveals what it's really about.

Going into further detail would kind of ruin it though.

If you do any google search of an anime/ japanese videogame, it will look like that. Rule 34 and such. Also, Madoka Magica has been marketed in a way that makes it look like a normal magical girl show. It's not; don't be fooled.

I did have safesearch active and it all looked like official artwork, so I don't really think that's a factor.

I understand that it's probably not loli and it's all really engaging and yadda yadda blah blah but from an outsiders first look, it sure looks like loli.

I had the same reaction when the first episode came out. Dropped it like a brick.

Then, one year later, after going through a few 'A year in review' posts of several aniblogging sites, I was more than surprised to find out that the vast majority picked it as anime of the year.

Unconvinced, I reluctantly watched that 'moe loli' show again. Shit got grim 'n dark real fast. I was glued to the screen. One of the better anime to come out recently (Not to mention that 2011 was a great year for anime)

Eh, I'd say tell your friend that SHAFT is the one who produced it, that Akiyuki Shinbo directed and that it was penned by Urobuchi Gen. If any of those names seem familiar to him, a bell should start ringing in his brain.

Lolicon is Animated Child Pornography. I believe the term your thinking of is Moe (mo-eh), which is really cutsy anime type stuff. In that case, I can't help you.

While character designs are in fact pretty moe, the rest of the art is some really striking, beautiful, and varied stuff.
