I was reading a gaming magazine recently (I can't remember which one)and they were aswering a letter from somebody whose copy of Mercenaries 2 had crashed, glitched, and then awarded them all the achivements in the game for no reason. they yhen aked why they should kep playing the game, as they could see the ending in youtube any time they wanted and they had all the achivements.
surely the point of games is to entertain yourself not just get achivements?

Thats the problem with achievements. Most of the people at my school only play the games for acheivements. They seem to have forgetten the meaning of the word game:a structured activity, usually undertaken for enjoyment.

I can't really imagine wanting to finish Mercenaries 2 even if you haven't unlocked the achievements.

I'm still waiting for Microsoft to make those things useful for something besides just gamer reputation. They should set the things up like Camel Dollars and make it so I can buy my avatar clothes or download games with them.

I for one am not bothered by achievements in the slightest, and almost feel sorry for those who take them more seriously than the game itself. Unfortunately it's impossible to get away from them these days. Sony have also announced that all games on the PS3 must now have achievements/rewards built in, I assume they've done this so people can boast about them in the PS3 home place. But what if a game works wonderfully without it? (Like most would)... this then means the developers have to add on a pointless page in their pitch/design document that puts emphasis on all the cool achievements, and then sony start clapping like an excited seal.

Playing solely for the achievements is pretty dumb, in my opinion. I like to unlock the achievements and everything, but I also like to play games without them, so long as they're fun.

When I play a game, I play for the fun of it. As fun as achievement hunting is, nothing is more satisfying than playing along and getting one by accident (anyone get Irony in Bioshock, haha)

I think the real point of achievements should be a reward for doing something really awesome. It would be better if you didnt know what they were until you unlocked them, you were only given the name. the old Ratchet and Clank games did it that way and it was great.

Achievements are nice to have. Playing a game only for the achievements seems a bit silly though.

I play game for the achievements, and I don't mean the electronic high five you get. I want to achieve things I don't just want the credit. Like COD4 I love the arcade mode on veteran because I think it would be super bad ass if I could beat it. There's no "achievement" for it but it would be one hell of an achievement.

I hate achievements, I really don't see the point. People used to play games for fun, but now people just play them for these stupid prizes that don't get you anything. I know you can find the ending and the full game walk through on the internet, but it's still more fun to play a game for the hell of it. That and it's fun trying to break the game.

Close,

Trophy points or whatever they have are going to be used as currency to buy gear for your Home. Pretty much what Jeffries said, but for PS3.

So you want Trophies.
Yeah...but with a bit more value, like for every 500 achievement points it equaled 100 Microsoft Points. Just some kind of additional value out of the time investment.

i find achievements to be a a reward for doing something important in the game. Most times these things are main plotline related so i see it as a good thing.

EDIT: Typos everywhere.
