So I found my old Magic the Gathering cards and my old rulebook, and my mate found his Magic the Gathering cards. This means only one thing could happen, playing Magic cards like we used to when we were in high school.

I have three theme decks, two Saviours of Kamigawa decks and one Ravnica deck. I don't know what decks my friend has anymore. As for us playing each other, none of us in the high school common room bothered with tournament rules so it wasn't uncommon for people to use 8th edition cards against 9th edition cards (all my cards are 9th edition). Which is probably why I kept losing to that damned Giles kid who had really powerful cards from 8th edition. My mate however doesn't have too many powerful cards and neither do I, so it should be a fair match.

Have you guys ever played Magic the Gathering?

Yep. thought not much anymore since all my friends fell out of it. I still have my trusty goblin deck, though, and I don't plan on getting rid of it. Unless I REALLY need money immediately.

Yes. It was a lot of fun until my younger brother mastered the game and created an evil "Black and Green" deck. Then he was invincible, and I gave it up.

Started to lose interest when the Mirrodin Block showed up, and everyone was making Affinity decks. Kamigawa didnt manage to bring me in either.

Its still a cool game.

That's why I never played my brother. Whereas I only had my one deck, he had dozens. The one I hated more than any of the others, though, was his goddamn Sliver deck.

I hate those things with an undying passion.

Yep, I've played since I was in third grade. Great game, except for my brother's overpowered-as-hell Black-White deck...

I used to play Magic all the time back in the day. It was THE thing to do in middle school, around the time that the Tempest/Stronghold/Exodus cycles came out. I still have most of my cards, but haven't played in a really long time.

Yeah I still play every now and then. My best deck is a white Angel deck with 70% my non land cards rare.

I used to play competitively when the Tempest and Urza Cycles were popular. I stopped shortly after the release of Mirrodin.

I played Upheaval/'tog like it was nobody's business and I also had a crazy green/blue Johnny deck that earned the nickname "The Whatthefuck" since that was the standard reaction to getting slaughtered 4th turn by it.

I just got into it recently by way of the Xbox Live arcade game that recently came out. It's actually quite fun when compared to the other TCGs I had to suffer through during their times of popularity (i.e. Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon). Currently I'm using a fairly nasty Red Burn deck in Magic Online, and I'm actually pretty excited for the new Zendikar set coming out this fall. Heard it's going to have some nice elf-deck killers in it ^-^.

I imagine this thread has been done over a few times already, but, yes- I played for several years. I encountered it in 1996, and was properly introduced and trained in 1998. Those who instructed me had been playing since Revised.
I stopped buying cards in 2001 as I was becoming increasingly disgusted by the way the game was being handled and marketed. WoTC had also chosen to kill off my favorite tabletop RPG at the time, and I wasn't interested in giving them any more of my money.
The last game I played was probably in 2002. I still have my decks and my "library" but I haven't touched them- not that I don't want to, just that the game has changed too much in the intervening years and I can't bear to see what it's like today.
I was very fond of black/blue or red/blue decks; I stubbornly refused to touch mono-white decks which were all the rage at the time. Especially white "weenie" decks. I'm sure the balance of the game has changed since then and there's some other bandwagon that everyone jumps on, but I always liked to avoid that sort of thing.

Been going at it on and off myself for the last.... what, decade almost. o_O Don't really play that much anymore, though I do have a few evil bastard decks (affinity and MUC, for the pros. For all the laymen, the decks may be summed up as 'I fuck you sideways so fast you won't know what the fuck' and 'you can't do anything untill I say it's okay while I whittle away your life ever so slowly and you can't do a damn thing about it', respectively), which I have lying around just in case and don't plan to change any time soon.

All in all I'd say that it's a really fun game, but if you want to get really competitive it just becomes way too expensive. Enjoy responsibly!
