Hello all!
This week marks the full release of the new MtG set, Guilds of Ravnica and was wondering if anyone has had any thoughts on it? Have you picked up some boosters or a bundle? Maybe you've gone for one of the pre-constructed planeswalker decks? Perhaps you're simply new to the game and want to have a nosy at what it's all about?
The set's built around 5 2-colour Guilds and their associated abilities. The Green/White Selesnya Conclave allows you to tap creatures for mana when casting, the Red/White Boros Legion features creatures that boost weaker creatures that attack in tandem, the Black/Green Golgari Swarm who get stronger the more stuff in is the graveyard, the Blue/Red Izzet League can cast spells multiple times, and the Blue/Black House Dimir can take sneaky looks through their decks.
First impressions for me have been pretty good. I like having a nice wodge of multicolour spells to play with, plus the returning split cards will be fun to delve into. Found myself immediately drawn to the Boros League, partly because I don't tend to play the colours, and certainly getting the Mythic Rare pull of Aurelia, Exemplar of Justice [http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=452903] doesn't hurt the chances of building a decent Boros deck.
Lots of Mana-generating artifacts came out of the Bundle I bought (the lockets, and especially the Chromatic Lantern [http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=452983]), will slot nicely into my Artifacts EDH deck I think, which will certainly benefit from the mana ramp.
Plenty of the Blue/Red Izzet spells that I packed (ones that jump out at me include Piston-Fist Cyclops [http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=452967], Beamsplitter Mage [http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=452905], Expansion // Explosion [http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=452974] and Firemind's Research [http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=452921]) really jump out at me as being potentially fun cards that I might either build a Standard Izzet deck with or slot into my Adeliz Wizards EDH deck; I suspect I might find a spot for Mission Briefing [http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=452794] in it as well since it recycles instants and sorceries.
On top of that I run a Green/White/Black Doubling Season deck built around counters and token generation, and I can see an easy way into that deck for stuff like Pelt Collector [http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=452891], Find // Finality [http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=452975], and Camaraderie [http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=452907].
So yeah, I've definitely found some stuff to like in the new MtG set. Anybody else had a chance to look through or play with it yet?
