Mainstream music seems to largely be a product these days.
It has always been a product, but it had a chance to evolve into something more in the days of old.
Also featured "better" people, who had to put on more of a performance than most people today. They had to actually be able to play their instrument, had to be able to sing alongside composing a majority of the piece rather than having the entire process covered by business executives and people who should be payed more. Lip syncing/fake playing ain't nothing new, though.

I guess if I were to put the reason why I detest a majority of modern mainstream, it would be how fake it would be.
At it's face and at it's core, rather than just one or the other. I cannot for the life of me get through any song by Niki Minaj or Lady Gaga, and it isn't because of the genre(s). They provide a face/image and pretty much nothing more.
It's surreal.

Well it was all predicted in George Orwells' 1984. Modern music is actually generated procedurally by computers. They have a library containing a few thousand basic rhythms and melodies, and the computer just stitches them together.

Of course, they can't actually write lyrics yet, that still has to be done by people. But they can make the bass loud enough that you can't hear the lyrics anyway.

Just be patient. Remember back in the 70s there was a flood of hedonistic dance music that is generally considered silly and shallow now? Yeah. Modern pop is the new disco. (I like some disco, but it certainly wasn't all gold) Eventually people will move on to other musical trends... and just like classic rock, which seemed to be dwindling at the time, good "alt" rock or "indie" or whatever it's calling itself now will be appreciated more.
