Actually, to a large extent, the shit stuff is the stuff that you don't get to hear. Most of it is shit, but most people aren't hearing that "mostly shit" part anyway, because that stuff gets quietly vetted out of the system before it even makes it onto a CD or wherever.

I think that alot of the modern mainstream music is quite terrible and that there is rarely anything actually worthwhile, so I just avoid the Top40 radio bullshit.

I'm sure there is good mainstream music out there. I'm not the sort of person to know, and even if a music theorist gave me a good pop song there is no guarantee I'd like it. Still, there is good music in every genre, but personally i like to dig myself into obscure sub-genres of heavy metal.

Songwriting is largely the same...there are plenty of good melodies floating around.

My main objection to modern mainstream music is that it just sounds so safe to me, it's all very neatly put together, and the vocals are so perfect that they just don't sound all that human.


This was a sleeper hit in the 50's, and it has a shit load more bite to it than anything I've heard lately.
