Do you stick to the mainstreams?
:DBZ
:Naruto
:One Peice
:Bleach

Or the cults?
:DearS
:Yoku Wakaru Gendai Mahou
:Robotics;Notes
:Saki
:Shangri La

Honestly i'm sick of hearing about "DBZ,Naruto,Ect..ect"
I can see the appeal if you generally enjoy them but the fact so many people bang on about them gets annoying feel free to hate because i dare say DBZ was boring for me but get this there are other animes out there.

So the question still stands do you watch mainstream, cult, Or differ between both.
I stick to Cult and never go towards mainstream cause mainstream is generally boring.

It depends on what you consider "cult" and "mainstream". If we're talking about your definition then I'd say a mix between the two, but leaning more towards cult.

A strong leaning towards cult (I like things that are unusual and "fresh", which extends to well beyond anime). I'll often troll the aniDB looking for new ideas that might be cool.

Basically (and honestly) this...I don't really keep up with communities and fan bases. I don't go to cons either so I don't know which of the anime I do watch are popular or not aside from the big ones. What complicates matters is how I only watch DVDs at this point.

Suzuka, Detroit Metal City, Rosario + Vampire, Demon King Daimao, Puni Puni Poemi...I'd assume those are cult or just not popular.

Fist of the North Star, Love Hina, GTO, Lucky Star...I would assume those are classic (especially considering EVERYTHING that is a parody includes a Fist of the North Star reference)

Not to say anything but I don't see ... DBZ, Naruto, One Piece or Bleach (Gintama is getting up there) as "Mainstream" they are just highly popular anime, I don't think we should call them mainstream just for that.

And what is "cult" anime?
Is it ALL the other anime apart from those ones?
I mean heck ask someone from the anime community "Do you know Clannad/Full Metal Alchemist/Gundam Seed" and I am sure that most of them will know these anime.

So I don't think that Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, One Piece or Bleach is "Mainstream" I only say that they are the majority's vote on what is the biggest anime which appeals to the maximum number of people.

Basically I can say "What is mainstream?" and "What is cult?" anime.
But screw all the mumbo-jumbo about the generalized population and genres.

OT: I tend to stay away from these popular anime, I mean sure they are great starting points for people new to anime ... but I think once you get into anime you can wipe them off your mind and get to anime that have a 12-26 episode plot-line.
Though I have no problem with people who watch the more popular and generalized shows.

As an animation major, what really attracts me to an anime is how it's animated. And, to be honest, a lot of anime just doesn't appeal to me even though I really enjoy manga. The better animated the show is, the more likely I'll like it, but for the most part, I still just sit on the sidelines of anime fandom and look from afar.

I did really like Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Panty And Stocking. And Gurren Lagann was great.

Good animation is why I was actually really excited about that "Swimming Anime", at least initially. The 30 second little animation spot for it before an actual anime for it was announced was animated brilliantly.

Totally lost me man. Haven't watched any of those, and I don't know the difference. What I do know, is that I like me some Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo. Baccano! is also good.

I think cult, but I don't know. I'm blissfully ignorant on the popularity of animes except the ones specifically mentioned in the mainstream thing. Fullmetal, DBZ, Cowboy Bebop are really the only 3 I can even name where I'd say with confidence that they're mainstream anime titles.

DearS is cult? *snrk*

OT: I'm geared towards "the stuff that I like", which obviously could mean anything.

My latest (as in "seen them recently", not necessarily "released recently") favorites are:

-Fullmetal Alchemist
-Girls Und Panzer
-Puella Magi Madoka Magica
-Mai-HiMe
-Bakemonogatari

My favorites from times of yore are:

-Neon Genesis Evangelion
-Geneshaft
-Crest of the Stars
-Scrapped Princess
-Azumanga Daioh
-Chobits
-Ranma 1/2

And likely a lot of stuff I forgot and/or missed, but for now, well...let people decide which ones are cult and which ones are mainstream.

Why, does "mainstream" now mean "bad"?

...

Okay, according to OP, yes it does.

Based on my observations, "cult hit" means the same thing as a "flop" but it sounds better. However, I believe OP thinks it means, "Extraordinary pearls not worthy to be thrown before the swine known as common humanity".

No, see, those are good, so they don't count as mainstream anime.

Anyway, the question seems to be if I like bad anime which are popular or bad anime which aren't. The answer is that I like good anime. Er, let me correct that: I like good anime, Bleach, and Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Mainstream since it is mainstream for a reason (ALOT of peole like it) since I do share similar taste to those people (One Piece if one of my favourite anime and I also watch Naruto and Bleach well used to).

The cults. Mainstream is mainstream because people in general have shitty taste, and would watch any crap some channels show.

Although, I've only heard about Robotics;Notes of those "cult" you mention. I like the Science series, and I haven't finished watching Robotics;Notes yet, but I probably will.

If someone wanted to torture me, then I think those mainstream you mention would be a good way to do it. I'll never watch any of that shit again willingly. They just go on and on and on.

I just watch what I like and I rarely decide on what it'll be by popularity. In fact, I usually stay away from the big names, because I fear it won't live up to my expectations.

My favorites are: Mermaid Melody, Mermaid forest and Kaleidostar. (Especially Mermaid forest is a very cool horror/thriller/mystery anime, and it's a miniseries of about 13 episodes, so it's easy to stick with and has a satisfying ending.)
