I just got MM (my first Zelda game by the way. Played a bit of OoT before, but not much) recently due to my PS3 currently being repaired, and so far...
I've beaten the Swamp Temple and am preparing to head off towards the Mountains I believe.
The Inverted Song of Time has hands down been the most useful thing in my arsenal, making the short three-day timer feel more like a week and greatly extending how much I can accomplish before the inevitable reset with the regular Song of Time. Add to this the Song of Double Time, which skips time ahead by twelve hours and is akin to Oblivion's "wait" feature, and I frankly just don't see any possible downside to using the Inverted Song at all times. Is there any reason what-so-ever to not use this every possible moment in the game? I'm sure not seeing one.

The only reason not to use it all the time is if you're in a hurry to get to a later day. So yeah, once I learned that song I basically just kept the time flow slowed down all the time.

Usually you'll not want to use the inverted Song of Time if you're waiting for a certain event to occur.

The Song of Double Time seems like it would take care of that though, with it skipping ahead 12 hours immediately.

Ya you won't want to have it on when you are waiting for a specific event to occur. It's fun to skip ahead by half a day but you can't just skip ahead 2 hours. There are a couple more ways to skip time but I don't want to spoil anything.

First Zelda game eh? You've chosen a good one to start with. Hope you enjoy it!

Also yeah, inverted song of time is your bread and butter song. Only a few places where you'd not want to have it active.

The biggest annoyance to using the song is that if you're filling out your Bomber's Journal, you'll find that it takes an AGONIZINGLY long time to wait for a short number of hours to pass for an NPC to do something quest-crucial.

I used it for the entire game. Even with that, I still almost ran out of time for both Great Bay Temple and Stone Tower Temple. Hell, I finished Stone Tower with only 1 or 2 real time minutes to spare.

I was determined to beat that game without guides. Definitely the most only difficult 3D Zelda.
I admittedly used online guides a couple times to help me start off, since this game tells you virtually nothing even at the beginning. Now that I'm getting used to the cryptic nature of the game (not my first overly cryptic game), I'm getting the hang of just how much outside the box one needs to think to get through this game, though I'm tempted to look up...
how to get past that giant ice block in Termina Fields that leads to the Mountains.
Hopefully it won't come to that, since I'm wanting to finish the rest of the game without guides or cheats.

Anyways, with how much one ends up using the Inverted Song I'm surprised that it wasn't the normal rate of time instead. Might as well have done that and added a song that increases the time-rate instead.

I remember the first time I played it, I forgot to get the bombers notebook after the first loop and wondered why I had so much trouble doing the sidequests.

Also, I somehow always knew how the 3-Day mechanic worked, because I had seen some friends play it. I'd like to start that game again not knowing anything about it. It would blow my mind.

Yeah, I figured that out. Unfortunately I've still had to use a guide a couple of times during the whole Mountains questline. Most notably with the Temple itself. I was missing a fairy hidden in a ceiling (that required the Lens of Truth active to see) in a room that was difficult to enter while the giant pillar was up, I couldn't figure out how to enter the boss chamber due to the concept of punching the blue parts of the pillar seeming far too stupid to actually work, and I didn't notice the cracks in a particular wall that needed to be blasted with a bomb. I've since beaten that and got the Gilded Sword, though I had to look up how to actually get the guy to craft it (got the Gold Dust myself, but didn't realize you needed to sharpen the Kokiri into the Razor Sword first). In the Ocean questline now, and so far the only thing I needed to look up was how to move the Zora in the water, since I didn't get a "grab" action when near him. Just started the Ocean temple (f&%*ing pirates), so wish me luck!

This thread makes me want to bust out my N64 and play this game again. It's tied with OoT as one my favorite in the series and one of my favorite games of all time.

Off topic, but N64 really does have some great games that can be gotten for fairly cheap these days. I got Majora's Mask for $20 at Gamers, and my favorite game of all time is still Turok 2 (though I've overplayed it way too much over the past 12 or so years) which can be gotten for $5 or less.

On topic, I've finally ran into a couple instances today where having the Inverted Song on wasn't the best idea. Overall it still seems best to have it on 95% of the time, but I do see a few uses for having it off now.

quick hint since you are new to zelda: Items found in dungeons can be expected to carry you past the barrier to the next dungeon. It doesn't always work like that, but expect it always.

Majora's is a great game, but it's not really representative of how Zelda games are. I hated it for about a decade because of how not Zelda-like it is. And yes, the game does no hand-holding at all. It pretty much expects you to be a veteran from Ocarina of Time before jumping into Majora's. In that respect, it probably was a poor choice to start with, but don't let that change your mind about playing it. Really, it doesn't matter which ones you play as long as you play them all with the exception of the DS ones and the second NES game. Those are for hard-core fans only, because they really aren't that much fun.
