*Raises flame shield* one of my favorite MMS's is the original COD: Black Ops. It had by far the best campaign and multiplayer maps of any COD title (though I am in love with the Revolution map pack for blops 2). The single player in Spec Ops: The line is phenomenal. If the matchmaking had been a little better

My conclusion upon reading all this, you guys need to play ArmA II. it has:
- Open levels where you can go wherever you want,
- You command the squad, not the other way around,
- Multiple endings and mission events dependent on you actions,
Unfortunately it is not at all user-friendly in the least but, I think it's fun.

I've thought about this very same thing and came to a conclusion.

It could do wonders taken in the direction of the following elements combined.

The setting has been so overdone that its not even worth investing time in even thinking on how we can improve it. Honestly, would much rather see some WW2 games make a comeback or something.
Fuck. No.

End of discussion.

I think from a technological standpoint, there isnt really anything left to add. Its just a matter of taking everything that is currently in the genre, and mixing and matching to get the winning combination.

Personally, I would, in the simplest terms, Take COD and set it in a ArmA map, and make it play out like something from Just Cause or Far Cry 2 or something.

The story for the game has a country in the middle of a civil war, between a progressive movement and the old government (both sides would be grey, neither better or worse). The US picks its own side, with maybe China picking the other (it would get shoehorned in there somehow, so might as well through it in now.) Instead of choosing either the Pro-Gov (US) side or the Pro-Movement (China) side, you would instead play as a mercenary thats part of one of 3 different PMCs. They each have their own reason for being there:

PMC A[footnote] For lack of actual names...[/footnote]: "A anonymous group" hires your PMC to stabilize the country quickly, as they have "investments" in that country that this civil war is jeopardizing.
PMC B: Another "Anonymous group" that hired your PMC to Destabilize the country further, hinting at wanting to actually take control of the remains for their own profit.
PMC C: You guessed it... "Another Anonymous group" that wants the same as the B group, but instead simply want to be the guys to "help rebuild" the country.

Instead of having actual story missions, the story would instead be dispersed in the form of News Broadcasts, and would be determined by a number of factors. By this, you basically have a massive number of news broadcasts that give off events that happened in game, and based on certain variables (like which side has the greater control and such) at given times, these broadcasts would play, detailing all that has happened (the idea is something like the procedural stories Shamus Young talked about. Hot the most detailed or griping of story, but a worthy sacrifice for this particular game.) This would result in a game whos story would basically depend completely any and most all choices you made in game.

The game world itself would be huge, being the size of a small (but still decently large) country. Your PMC would have numerous bases to which you could fast travel to (with helos and such) and receive missions to accomplish. These missions would be anything from basic "go here and kill stuff" to "blow this bridge up" or "go here and take over this location". There would also be a number of stats kept track of, like how many Government/Progressive forces you killed/destroyed, how many US/Chinese forces you killed/destroyed, civilian kills and property damage and the like. These stats would also affect the game world (like with the missions mentioned above) that would either help you or come back to bite you in the ass.

The game would also have a "Private" and "Public" game modes instead of single-player and multi-player. Private game mode will be the same game, but only you (or anyone that you allow in) are in the world. Public mode would basically be like a MMO with hundreds of players in the world, fight with or against each other.

Thats all I have for now... Come to think of this, it would probably be a decent ArmA mod, wouldnt it?

What would it take to make a good MMS Singleplayer campaign these days? While most of us can agree that the genre today is the very epitome of uncreativity and linearity, I don't think the basic concept of setting a game in roughly the present day with roughly modern weaponry and militaries is inherently broken, just poorly executed the vast majority of the time. What do you, my fellow Escapists, think would be required to make this concept work?

EDIT: Try to be more specific than just "be / don't be like (insert game here)". What particular mechanics / design decisions / storytelling / etc. would make this tired-out concept work?

I am more than fine with how it plays today.

IF I want crazy guns or something I would rather go play Borderlands/Serious Sam/ the like.

I for one enjoy ver proudly the Call of duty series to this day, and IMO it dosnt deserves all the shit it gets. At all. Sue me.

Fine, ok?

Why would I sue you over your opinion? You can like it if you want.

On Topic: I have to agree with the "more realistic crowd". Encouraging a more tactical element to the game ala ARMA or Rainbow Six would be interesting. Providing more routes and angles to move around through the maps while removing handholding elements like objective markers and scripted "press x to kill all bad guys" events as well as removing unnecessary limits like killing the player for crossing an invisible line without doing EXACTLY as told would go a longs ways towards making this fun. (run-on sentences ftw! :p)

Well, since my first response is now against the rules, I'll express some minor opinions here.

In my opinion, almost everything that could have been done good, has been done, at least alright. Whether these things should be put into one package or not, I don't know. MMS' should be a very niche genre, favoring more towards realism and respect to soldiers than fun gameplay or interesting narratives, but we've been shown that those both can be done in one package (albeit not to their highest strengths).

Here's how you make a good Modern Military Shooter:
Start working on it, scrap EVERYTHING partway through, make something worthwhile instead.

I don't often see much of a mention of games like Rainbow Six Vegas on this thread. I found that they have quite a few different aspects that I very much enjoy in a modern FPS.

For instance, while their health system is the fast regenerating kind like in CoD, one shot at close range can often still be enough to instantly kill you, even on the easiest difficulty. Combining this with the fact that save points can often be far spread out, means that there is a lot more emphasis on playing safe and careful and using cover rather then simply charging in.

So I think such a style can make for an interesting kind of FPS. And if I had to come up with my own game, I'd have something where you had to deal with hostage rescue situations rather then a war, where you would have to plan beforehand how to storm a building and where the enemy numbers might be a lot smaller then that of your team but getting killed would have a significant impact, and also, where bad timing could end up with hostages getting executed.

Something that isn't 'Muricuh. Played as them so much, or had games where 75% of the actual dialogue was done by Americans. Not being racist mind you, just getting sick of the overtones.

Captcha: hit the hay.

It's getting smarter...

Well... If you want any hints on what I suggest doing...

Step 1. Consider making an MMS
Step 2. Decide not to do it after all and make an open world fantasy RPG instead.
Step 3. ???
Step 4. Profit.

Seriously... I'd prefer Call of Duty 1 and 2 being rereleased.
Especially 1. There haven't been enough health packs lately and too much automatic health regeneration.
