I just watched a programme on Channel 5 (UK) listing the top 40 movies of the 1980's. Despite the fact that they must have asked some complete morons to do the voting (No Star Wars movies, no Terminator, no Aliens, Temple Of Doom, but not Raiders or Crusade, etc) it did inspire me to look for more movies that i might have missed, or just dismissed stupidly.

Can anyone who replies leave a list of any movies from the 1970's until now that you feel should be on a list like this. I'm looking primarily for Action, Comedy and Science Fiction movies, im not interested in Artsy movies, and only like some Horror and Drama, but this list will help more than just me I hope, so feel free to list whatever you want, and i'll edit my post accordingly with all of them.

You can post 1 movie, or 100, it doesn't matter, im looking for as many as possible, please remember to list the year it was released, or at the very least the decade. Thanks for all your help.

Activating Movie Dump Protocol (70-90s)

Alien (1979) - Perhaps one of the best examples of Sci-Fi horror. Remains the golden standard for the genre.

Aliens (1986) - Pure movie fun. Excellent example of a movie made to enjoy. Typical and excellent example of 80s action.

Predator (1987) - One of the best examples of 80s action, the movie is simple in concept and execution - Arnold + unstoppable alien menace = Action excellence.

Ghostbusters (1984) - Pure comedic genius. 80s comedy at its finest, with the perfect blend of slap stick, innuendo, and jokes.

Ghostbusters II (1989) - Worthy successor, for the same reasons as the first.

Evil Dead II (1987) - The ultimate camp movie. Join Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi as they take the entire horror genre's tool bag and turn the dial so far it twist from horror to hilarity.

Army of Darkness (1992) - Worthy Successor to Evil Dead II.

Unforgiven (1992) - 'The Last Great Western.' Watch Clint Eastwood close the door on the Western with what is arguably one of the best examples of the genre. We all have it coming.

Terminator (1984) - The golden standard for horror/thriller/chasers, with special effects that still look excellent today.

Terminator II (1991) - Undeniably the best action movie of the 90s, and arguably the best action movie of all time. Unbelievable, still excellent special effects made the movie look great. Held the 'Best Chase Scene' title for 2 decades.

The Thing (1982) - Genre definer for Body Horror Horror. Excellent effects and execution of a simple concept.

American History X (1998) - The movie on racism from the white perspective. Excellent acting, excellent directing, excellent writing. You get the picture.

Ernest Scared Stupid/All (1991) - It's Ernest. No more needs to be said.

Apocalypse Now (1979) - The Anti-war film that makes war seems fun, as long as your in 1st Cav. An excellent all around movie that shows the horror of war, unless its being done to the tune of orchestra.

Das Boot (1981) - The sole Anti-War movie that doesn't have a moment of war glorification. Following the crew of a German attack submarine during the closing years of WWII, this over 2 hour war movie was so rough it actually made you feel bad for the Germans.

Rocky (1976) - On the surface a simple boxing movie. Underneath, a griping tale of a man, beaten down but still trying.

First Blood (1982) - Perhaps the first blockbuster PTSD movie, Rambo is a gut wrenching action movie about a troubled Vietnam vet. before there was the extreme violence of the sequels, there was the action movie that made you think about the affects of war on man. With violence.

Robocop (1987) - A action classic, Robocop is one of the 80s movies that took a concept - unchecked capitalism - and explored it by shooting their way through it. Again, on the surface, an excellent action movie. Underneath, a surprisingly smart movie.

Dirty Harry (1971) - Like Robocop, but 16 years earlier, this movie is a thinker. Follow Harry, a cop who just wants to save people and put away criminals, as he clashes with his superiors, who want to follow the law. The question is put to the viewer - whats more important to society, strict adherence to the law, or the pursuit of 'true' justice? Also, that's a big gun!

can't go any newer then that. I still think 2000+ movies need more time before we can decide if their 'classics' or 'must watch' movies.

Event Horizon (1997) is considered a classic of both Sci-fi and horror. It still holds up and I'd say it deserves a spot on your list.

I'd argue against Event Horizon myself. The movie's only redeemable characteristic is it's concept, which is so blatantly close to another Sci-Fi franchise that it's considered canon by a large portion of its fans.

Personally, Event Horizon belongs on the 'needs a remake' list. Done correctly, I think it would be an excellent movie. As it is, its a poorly scripted and directed movie that has zero horror.
