Imagine you could design your own shooter.
To make it perfect (for you personally), what would it take?
What does it need to do to grab your interest (even if you don't like the FPS genre)?

I was into FPSs a long a time go. I was addicted to DukeNukem 3d and Quake I. Now I can't find much pleasure playing current generation of FPSs.

What would I like to have?
- A change of perspective
Playing an FPS where you are a native American hunting down the pilgrims and "founding fathers"

- Another form of realism
War is ugly really ugly, try to take that more seriously, include the bad side of war like "Heart of Darkness", "Apocalypse now!" Hell even "Platoon" or "Full Metal Jacket" did it right.

- Include the other side
So I killed 3472 Arabs, 7628 Nazis and 1271 Russian terrorists. Let me try to be an Arab trying to fend of an Invasion led by the U.S. Army for a change. Or an SS-Officer shooting prisoners and torturings POWs, while deporting them into the Concentration camps would be a challenging role to play. Seriously who of you didn't want to be a mad russian terrorist with a handful of Nuclear missles ready for the launch from time to time.

- Yet another form of realism
Include realistics physics and pain reaction. Seriously, if I shoot at someones kneecaps I want to see him suffer. I want to see them paralyzed by the pain.
If I score a headshot I want him to be dead not reduced by 23% of his health.
I my bullet pierces my enemy's lung I want to see him gasping for air, not cursing me and throwing a grenade.

That's all I can think of now, so your turn, I guess.

So basically you want violent politically charged war porn that places traditional good guys as the enemy so you can inflict suffering on them.

No way is this thread going to derail...

Agreed, the main reason we don't play as these characters frequently is because their not nice, and are therefore depicted as the villains.

I would say a sci fi shooter, with very little guns, and is more about interacting with people, like mass effect but with better shooting mechanics.

Single player ?
- Ability to open door via grenade/rocket launcher instead of running around like achicken with its head chopped off in search for keycard, switch, or lever.
- Ability to destroy fences.
- Ability to level down whole buildings with proper usage of explosives.
- Jump - grab overhead platform - elevate.
- Story : I, Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway and Arthur Conan Doyle visit Africa in hope to climb Kilimanjaro but are sucked by some distortion of reality and end up wandering throught times and places in hope to fix history and find way home. Usage of elephant guns NOT OPTIONAL.

I love how every time someone makes one of these threads, their "ideas" are always incredibly boring sounding. Woo, I get to play as a Nazi and shoot unarmed prisoners. That sounds like a really thrill ride. Also, "Play as an Indian and hunt down pilgrims and founding fathers"? What the hell? Its kind of hard to portray the opressed people as the good guys when the are massacring innocent settlers.

I don't play FPS games to be challenged intellectually. Hell, I don't play video games to be challenged intellectually. I play them to relax, have fun, and maybe enjoy a good story if the game feels up to it. Not to commit war crimes and then feel bad about them afterwards.

So what's your point? You really want to tell me that the FPS Games are political correct (or even remotely accurate) right now?
Why don't you try to stop critizing MY PERSONAL PREFERENCE and offer a better one!
If this thread is going to derail it's because some people are unable to deal with constructive critism and rather stick to whining, complaining and ranting.

Clive Barker's Jericho, mixed with Transformers: War for Cybertron and/or Dark Void. Maybe toss in the premise and potential of Darkest of Days and Singularity. ...except actually good this time.

I'm just saying it's kinda weird to want to play a game where you're a Nazi shooting Americans, and emphasizing their suffering.

Also, a World War 1 game would be neat.

Weapons that feel that they are working. Hotlead is nice but make the weapons feel effective.

Change up what to aim at. Dead Space makes me aim for the limbs instead of the head. Punish me for not following its rules.

Vehicles must not be boring.

Friendly AI must be able to drive a vehicle or shoot at what I mark.

Enemies that are original, not bugs or something stupid.

Infact, make me an FPS where I play as a bird person! (Something cool like the Chozo from Metroid or the Skirmishers from Halo: Reach.)

Squad-based FPS, but the only thing modified by difficulty settings is the intelligence of your squad's AI. On super-easy mode, your squad does most of the heavy lifting all the way until the final areas. On super-hard mode, your squad is so abysmally rock-stupid one of them pulls the pin on a grenade and friggin' throws the pin. Hilarity ensues. Bonus points if one of them attempts to breach a door using a shoulder-ram, and actually whines about how it kinda hurts.

Fun fact: In the real military, our "entry weapons" usually means either a mighty boot... or a shotgun. I'm not even kidding. Padlock giving you a headache? Bust out the sawed-off. I will instantly buy the FPS that lets you use a shotgun to "unlock" a door.

I wanna see personal hazards. Sweat dripping into the eyes, sunglasses (ballistic shades, yo) that hamper vision in dim areas... For that matter, when going from the bright outdoors to a dim little mud hut it'll take a moment before a person can begin to see things. In that same line of thought, going from dark mud hut to bright outdoors means a moment of near-blindness. I'm not saying you need to take a moment to press a button to wipe the sweat from your eyes, but it's little touches like that that can make the "realistic" FPSs that much more real.

Weird perspectives you could use. I heard that Mirror's Edge has things blurry except in the centre of the screen, like real vision, which was novel. What is motion was easier to spot in the blurry areas as well (dunno how you'd do that, though)?

Alternatively, peripheral vision...you seen normally in the centre of the screen, but then you have 180 degrees squished in outside of that, you can see directly left or right, just not nearly as well as forwards. You'd have to look at the objet to exmiane it or aim, but you could spot danger of the the sides.

As well as more obvious, commonplace stuff like being able to change local down, run up walls and so on.

long single player (15-20h) FPS with focus on actual single player not multiplayer. Played my friend's BF3 and finished it in 1 sitting. It was ok but clearly all developing muscle was working on MP....

In SWAT4, all of the officers carry breaching charges or dedicated breaching shotguns (but when you order "breach and clear" you can't choose which one they use if they ahve more than one), in Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, Shotguns can be used that way, as well as explosives.

I would like RPGs to have various ways of getting through doors, and blasting the thing is an option, but gets you less XP or is noisy to encourage people to get keys if they can.

I like the idea of variable teammates AI, though. Or personalities, sometimes they are reckless and gungho, other times they stay behind and let you get shot first etc.

Destructable terrain. 16 bit arcade graphics. use your victims dismembered limbs as projectiles for your rocket lawnchair.
