i think it's conceivable that faith could get some form of handgun training. not to use all the time, but just if it is totally necessary.

I didn't find the combat terrible in Mirror's Edge. I think that the game would be better if it had been removed, or completely optional, instead of those forced segments that you would end up being put through.

Completely agree with this one. the only thing that killed the game for me was the combat. It was much more fun running around and dodging people.

It's nice to see so many people rate the first ME, I get slated so often for recommending it to people.

I don't think do away with the combat entirely, like the original post said it'd be cool if it was made into part of the speed run so some sort of disarm into a flip and then carrying on. It needs to be part of the story though, if it was just "run into room, kill all teh baddies" then it wouldn't have made any progress. The Blues are needed though, they gave it that sense of urgency.

I think if it was entirely sandbox the game would suffer though - Although the linear corridor sections were irritating at times, it did make you appreciate it so much more when it all opened out again. So maybe they need to find the balance there.

Enjoyed the story too, and that soundtrack was consistently awesome. Hoping there's more of the same in the 2nd one

I agree. The most fun I had was when I was just running around through the DLC levels.
Just leave combat out. Make it a game about just free running. They can add more challenge to the stuff you are doing rather than add combat.

Yeah I think combat should be there but not forced upon you, and I always thought it was so much more fun when you don't use weapons.
I always thought that a leg sweep style move would be good, where it knocks them down but doesn't kill them.

I'd prefer if they left out combat entirely. That game was at it's best when you were jumping across rooftops. Gimme more rooftops!

I would say, give us a small pistol with not much ammo that works as a sort of elaborate take-down mechanism made into part of the free running. For example: there are a bunch of guards in a room with catwalks and stairs. They are armed with assault rifles, you have your standard measly pistol. If you try and play it like any other FPS, you will die almost instantly. Instead, you run up the hand-rails on the stairs, get a guard in a headlock, shoot him in the head and quickly fire at his buddy. However, that still leaves his other buddies, who are now fully aware of your presence and ready to shoot on sight. So, you jump between catwalks while running faster than they can train their sights on, and engage in another series of badass pistol takedowns such as hanging under a catwalk where a guard is and shooting him through the catwalk.

Hell, they could even make it a multiplayer mode! One, maybe two, players run around avoiding and taking down with their silenced pistols all the other players who are the standard slower/average speed guards armed with assault rifles. A bit like that one Splinter Cell mode the internet has told me about.

I don't want combat to be removed, but it should be optional. It should just be used as a way to buy some extra time. Like tackling a police to the ground and continue running while he desperately tries to get up.

Simple, Make up your mind. Running away from guys with guns is fine, but make it Optional to go past them if they are in the way, so that way, we have freedom.

Oh and also, make an Epic Boss Battle. A chase sequence would have sufficed.

The thing with Mirror's Edge and guns is that this game needs to have a clear and present identity.

Is Mirror's Edge a First-Person Parkour game, or a First-Person Shooter.

In the words of Mr. Miyagi, "Walk on left side road, safe. Walk on right side road, safe. Walk in middle of road, eventually you get a squished. Like a grape."

What that means is that you have to choose one side or the other. If you dabble around the middle too much, you get squished.

Look at the highly successful Modern Warfare 2. It is clean and simple a FPS. Nothing can change that. From beginning to end you run, you gun, you have some fun.

Now look at the recent Mass Effect 2. It's a great game, no doubt there, but I can hardly tell if it's a RPG or a Third-Person Shooter. Thus, it suffered from the poor identity it had.
The original Mass Effect did not have this problem. It was a RPG with guns in it. You had an inventory, a deep level up system, and the best dialog systems I've ever used. The guns were there just to complement the game's world. Now Mass Effect 2 has dummied down the RPG side and risen the shooter side, and now it walks in the middle of the road.

So, no, I do not believe that Mirror's Edge 2 should have standard combat. It should be fluid and not last more than a second or two. You should also be able to evade them completely.

Eh... avoid it?

In Mirror's Edge, the combat was passable for the most part because you could ignore it for the most part. That is, until the last few levels where you're forced into combat. As long as you're not forced into combat, it's fine. Combat is difficult and annoying because it's the game telling you "Yeah, you suck at Free Running. This is your punishment." Just make all combat in the game optional and it'll be much better received.

It's possible to have a sense of urgency without fighting the blues. Think about it, wouldn't you feel a greater chance of urgency if you COULDN'T fight back? Maybe instead of having the blues have guns, make them like the british police, with their billy clubs and tasers :), that way you don't have to worry about getting shot, but you still have to get around them, because you can't fight back. It maintains the sense of urgency, and it would maintain the speed, because your goal is to keep moving so that you don't get cornered.
Oh I agree with not fighting with them (maybe the odd one like I said) In the first place it seemed it was insinuated that ME2 would work better purely as a parkour simulator, and thats what I was responding to with that comment about needing the blues.

Sorry for the confusion ^^

They should do a seperate parkour simulator though...

As many have said, combat should be quick either way. You take them down and move or you get taken down. This should be largely optional too, you get punished with one guard catching up, and you take him down quick or more come and you're done. I think guns should have a sort of lock on system, like many third person shooters. The gun shouldn't centre you because that's not your focus, your focus should be on the obstacle in front of you. You could run for the wall, and the gun locks on to the enemy in the corner of the screen, almost like a side note. Guns just can't work any other way, it's too clunky.

Combat just shouldn't be in the game at all you should be avoiding it. All you literally did was run up slide punch them to death and if you couldn't punch them disarm them and shoot one mag of ammo at people.

I really doubt that would work. The linearity of the first game is what allowed for such good level design, as well as a sense of scale that sandbox games rarely deliver. It just wouldn't work, and has been done better by other games. Let Mirror's Edge do what it does best, and what it does best is not sandboxing.

I agree with much of the sentiments here about reducing, removing or making combat optional.

Also, I'd like an option like in racing games to have first person or third parson. First person running around makes me dizzy and sick (similar to film Cloverfield or 90% of FPS I've ever played).
