I am trying to write a sci-fi story but I have had trouble thinking up Gun names, since all guns relect its version and stuff and somtimes the bullets I believe. So since its the future and they are not using today's guns, I have been trying to think of gun names but I don't know how to start.

Can anyone help? (and if you need more info on such guns, ask me.)

For proper nouns, I always use professional sports players; though I stick to players who never got famous.

For instance: Jeff pulled his custom-made Daigle .38 calibur pistol from his glovebox and pointed it at his unwanted passenger...

For those who are curious about who I'm referring to... [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandre_Daigle]

Whoa that seems to work, I would totally believe that's the name of a brand of gun.

Guns should always have a surname as their brand/model. If a certain weapon is of a certain nationality, give it a name from that country. A British revolver could be something like Ledyard .357, an Italian rifle could be Bocelli .45cal or something.

I'm not very good at this, but I find that the best names are the ones that get more disturbing the more you think about them. Like, for instance, the Serial Peacemaker (although that was the name of a ship).

P.S. Arrr, me hearty.

Take a bunch of elements from the borderlands guns and go on from there.

Weaksauce Flaming Spitter, for instance.

Naming them after regional specialties to your hometown might work. It worked for character names in The Pitt (O-Dog and Lulu are both references to Pittsburgh eateries.)

The "Essem 10mm" handgun should be familiar to Boston-area hot dog lovers...

i have a good one.
A Fractal De-nebulizer.
it uses 3 sapphires to focus artificial light energy into a charging capsule.
It then fires a cloud of metal shavings through the heated charging capsule to form a thick ball of molten steel which sticks to organic surfaces ((such as the facial area)), but is hot enough to melt/fuse with most metals or nano-weave materials.

It weighs roughly 6.7 pounds, and can use whatever scrap metal you have laying around as ammo. (( it basically crushes the steel and shaves it until the reserve container is full.)) The container which holds the metal shavings can hold enough ammo for 56 shots, and cant be removed, and replaced for faster reloading, or so you can store ammo ahead of time for later use.

Because the shavings are in the controlled enviroment of the reserve capsule, they never rust or solidify unless the reserve capsule itself it cracked, broken, or damaged beyond repair. ((the container itself is made of a nano-weaved carbon mesh wish forms to fit the ammount of metal shavings inside of it, and is harder to damage because of its flexability))

All in all its an effective weapon against enemy infantry, living or otherwise, and can be used in almost any situation. Using even the spent cartriges for tradition firearms as ammunitions.
Thus, when your allys use ammuntition, you gain ammuntion.

Whoa, that was alot more typing then i thought it would be.

I just use letters and numbers. TDA-95 'Thunder'. Sometime going into greater detail, 'Terran Defense Arms model-95 .50 caliber, bolt-action. Nicknamed 'Thunder' for the distinctive rumbling sound after a shot.

Just throw together some random numbers and letters, see what you get. The letters could be the manufacturer, the number can be completely random or reflect on when it was created. The Russian's do that with their stuff, Ak-47, Sks-45, T-72.

But really, random numbers and letters. M1207, TD990, AR515-A3. Unless your looking for specific names, then you need a little more creativity.

>_< Ok I just remembered TI=Texas Instruments. It was supposed to stand for Total Incenerator. In fact just go with functions or what it fires. Pulse Rifle is a copyrighted but good example. "Superheated plasma coater" "Air activated heat laser" etc.

I'm not sure about the others, but the AK was named after its inventor Anton Kalashnikov.

Guns from the future should sound sexy, like the Reventón blaster or GS Razor-pistol (GS standing for gun/sword).

Actually, most "modern" guns are fairly old. Two "recent" models include the Glock 17 amd the Desert Eagel, invented in early 1980s. That's 40 years without much innovation in handguns. A lot of "modern" guns were invented during World War 2 or the early Cold War, with only minor changes since then (usually changes in materials). The AK-47, which is still being made today (but was invented in 1947), is a good example.

Of course, there are some new guns. The P90 for one. But most of the "classic" guns you think of are older. Sometimes a lot older. The standard pump-action 12g shotgun (from varous videogames and movies) was invented in 1937. Most revolvers are even older.

The designs don't change much cause, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Most "new" guns are just minor variations on older guns anyway (usually having to do with getting around gun control laws).

So... my advice is just use modern gun names for anything that looks/acts like a modern gun. Maybe add/change a number. (if you're trying to name some sci-fi-ish gun, then please ignore me)

It is Avtomat Kalashnikova 47. His first name is Mikhail. Avtomat mean automatic I think; and Kalashnikova is after his last name. The number on the end means its a 1947 model.

I happen to own one, well own isn't the right word. I have one in my possession, beautiful peace of weaponry; also have a SKS-45, tends to fowl up during loading.

Well the gun I first mentioned I called the Mr22 Assualt Rifle, now the Mr22 is just the name. The Guns themselves are a bit realistic, they shot normal bullets not lasers. I was just thinking that if the story Sci-Fi but with some reality, then the guns must also have names like that.

Or is it competely fine just to name guns something that sounds cool?

How bout GS Fire Slash (flamethrower/sword). Cock Fight (a small gun hidden in your pants).
The Sycthe six-shooter (a bazooka the can shoot up to six homing missles at a time).
