Ok! I have heard some good ideas thus far!

Concepts like the "peacemaker," can be both foreboding, and catchy. However, you could always end up being an anime with guns name the Harkonnen, or the Jackal. (3 Internets to anyone who can tell me the anime I am thinking about.)

Alternatively, using the name of its inventor, then having that name be culturally relevant to the region it was created in is quite logical.

Farscape did the gunblade right.
I warned you.

Spoilered for your convenience.

Since the invention of the gun, there has been one massive, glaring flaw in its design: by and large it is mediocre to downright lousy at close range. This is especially a problem when the highest rate of fire possible is 3 rounds per minute. So, there have been many ideas to make it a close range weapon as well.

I'm not opposed to this. When the ammunition runs out, you'd better have those bayonets handy. What I am opposed to is the frankly ridiculous depiction in media (FF VII I'm looking at you). Yes, history is full of knives with guns attached. Mostly, though, they are just that: knives. I have yet to find one instance of a 5 foot broadsword with a pistol grip. Mostly because the torque would snap your wrist if you tried to swing it, and the weight would make it impossible to aim if you fire it. In short, the gun/sword combo is somewhat ridiculous.

That being said, I like the idea behind them. As a certain comic book reviewer once said: "our lot loves the lavishly ludicrous." Big swords are cool. Big guns are cool. But this time, it wasn't chocolate and peanut butter. All in all, it makes more sense to concentrate on keeping the enemy at a distance and keep melee combat as a final contingency.

TL;DR - I'll take an assault rifle with a bayonet over a sword with a pistol strapped on.
You haven't seen D'argo's weapon, have you? At first glance, it is a sword (his race tends to hit pretty hard up close), but it has the option of transforming into the gun. Not too farfetched in a sci-fi setting, really.

How bout GS Fire Slash (flamethrower/sword). Cock Fight (a small gun hidden in your pants).

Just..sit down before you hurt yourself, please?

(and don't even get me started on the gunblade.)
Dont see you making up any amazing gun names
Wow. I've never seen such an obvious joke go so far over someone's head.

(Your joke went over facepalm guy's head, I mean.)

OT: Don't name the guns unless it really matters to the story. Narrative-wise, "pistol" or "shotgun" should do just fine. To quote a somewhat overrated movie, "I don't know what its called. I just know the sound it makes...When it takes a man's life." In other words, as far as the plot is concerned, it doesn't matter what the gun is called, it only matters what it does.

....I think i have beat you all beat with these two:

A Crossbow that fires explosive arrows and has a chainsaw bayonet.

AND

A light saber that doubles as a blast

*blinks as he reads what the thread is about*

Ah shit you were after names, n-not made up weapon idea's...my this is embarrassing.

WELL! I guess you could always go with the good ol' fashioned Cerberus Tri-Assault Carbine(An Assault rifle with both a grenade launcher attachment and a detattable kind of high powered spike launcher on top) OR The Goliath Rocket launcher (Just a regular rocket launcher with a cool name). Meh, take your pick.

I accept your challenge

The M-2040 "desert Peace" heavy machine gun.
The 2040 is the latest and greatest in forcible peacemaking. Combining technology ranging from state of the art to as old as war itself. Firing .50 Caliber depleted Uranium penetrator rounds at a rate of 450-600 rounds per minute. Electro-magnetic acceleration coils in the barrel can be activated to more than double the muzzle velocity and increase armor penetration. However, due to notorious unreliability of the electronics in the field, the M-2, upon which it is heavily based, is preferred by soldiers.

For added fun, look up the quote "they made a desert and called it peace." (that's where I got the name.)

Unfortunately, no. I saw a few episodes of Farscape and liked it, but I never got to see all of it.

I'm not sure about the others, but the AK was named after its inventor Anton Kalashnikov.
Incorrect. The name stands for "Kalashnikov automatic rifle, model of 1947" or "Автомат Калашникова 47" in russian and the guy who made them is is called Mikhail.

Back on topic: some things you shouldn't do:
-Take an existing gun and increase the number behind it to make a better version, it just looks stupid when you're talking about an M16A7E2 or an MP199.
-Don't be anal about everything following exactly the same naming convention. No two manufacturers or nations can agree about it in reality.
-Don't add famous historic guns too far into the future. P90's look cool and will be around for quite some time if nothing unusual happens but using them in 2200 is like running around with a musket today.
-Nobody nicknames their guns "The Exterminator".

It was invented by Mikhail Kalashnikov. The "A" means automatic.
