Apply that to this story - How many people do you think photograph their kids without any harrassment from security? And how many primary schools do you think do allow parents to film their kids? And how many town halls do fly the Union Jack without wringing their hands over "offending minorities"?
You are not allowed to film your children at most public primary schools in Australia for anything other than assembly items really, so no sports carnivals or other events. Just last year the teachers started to really clamp down on filming at the primary school that my little sisters go to.

Do minorities really get offended about people flying the union jack? Over here in Australia no one really cares about offending minorities. There is this attitude among most Australians that this is Australia, if you don't like it fuck off (though most minorities don't really have anything to complain about in Australia).

Security guards get bored. Cops get bored.
Besides that I remember reading about an experiment a little while ago. They took two groups of people and set them up as prisoners and guards. Within days the guards were forcing the prisoners to humiliate themselves and beating them. After the experiment they were shocked at their behavoiur.
Power does weird things to people, they like to excercise it.
I remember that! I studied it in Psychology, it was conducted by a husband and wife if I recall, the experiment got cancelled early due to the extreme response of the 'guards' and the wife split from the husband.
That's where I knew it from too. Probably the same curriculum. Do you live in Australia?
Nah, England. What other case studies did you look at?

Right, the world is going insane at a faster rate than I could have predicted.

Time for another week of stockpiling food in my attic and sitting bolt upright with my rifle in my hand!

Send me a PM when it's all over.
Mind if I join you?
I'll bring lawn chairs and buttered popcorn!
OOH! I'll bring the videogames!

OT: ... ...... wow...
(I find myself having these sorts of moments more often...)
I ninja'd you hard, bro. But you may still bring the videogames if you wish. :)

No, minorities don't worry about the Union Jack at all. The tabloids would have you believe that every town council in the UK is terrified that they might though. Occasionally you get a stupid story in which some county fair refused to fly flags for fear of offending certain groups, and then everyone complains about political correctness gone mad. It isn't made clear that that either the story was false/exaggerated in the first place or that this particular situation was just an isolated case, and that every other county fair and town council would think nothing of flying flags as always.

Welcome to England.

According to political correctness, you can't promote anything without obviously being completely against everything else even remotely 'opposed' to it.

For example: "Merry Christmas" is apparently offensive, as it singles out one particular winter-related festivity as the 'correct' one to mention. Result? "Happy Holidays", that wishy-washy, cover-all-your-bases-lest-you-get-sued quote.

God -- sorry, I meant to say "Your preferred deity, deities or alternate focal point or points of worship of choice if you happen to worship or believe in any" -- help you if you wear a cross.

Mind you, our city's newly-elected mayor has been making a name for himself as an absolute asshat -- our libraries have magazines (Personal experience tells me they're always at least four years out of date) available in a number of languages.

Anyway, our mayor visited a local library and noticed this -- and immediately flew into a rage, demanding that the non-English magazines be taken off the people reading them and thrown away.

The microchip story has been in the newspapers here in the US lately. Maybe you should do yourself a favor and read more.

Which founding fathers? Boadicea and King Arthur? This is ol' Blighty we're talking about, not the Colonies.

And yeah, this is just stupid. I recall hearing (or rather, reading) another story a while ago, about how some parents took pictures of their kids in the bathtub and they were nearly (or actually) taken away by the Guvmint. Don't ya just love the world we live in? I say we nuke the place, take some good, sensible people to space and start all over again in about a hundred thousand years or whatnot.

Well...I stand corrected. Totally my bad. A bit embarrassing really.

I suppose this whole thing made me think of the craziness that goes on in the US also, so I replied with that mindset. Thanks for the note.

When I first read the thread title I was like "wait...what," but it's a pretty sad statement that when the OP said that it was in the UK I was not surprised in the least. This says nothing about global society, but EVERYTHING about England. This is the same fucking country that is on a steady march to becoming everything Alan Moore described in V for Vendetta. Their trash cans have even have microchips that detect when their are trash in them now.

No, really: http://www.redorbit.com/news/technology/1832760/uk_privacy_group_says_govt_spying_through_trash_bins/
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/mar/05/rise-of-microchips-in-bins

The UK is becoming saturated with the police state mentality. It's no surprise that some rent a cop moron would do this there.
Thanks for insulting my country with a couple of URLs.
Happens to America more times a day here then you'd think, but no sad to hear people don't think England is a Golden Bird.

On topic: A lot more places are going Robo-Cop then you think.

Great, no more freedom in the UK. If you lose the freedom to have memories of your children, some parents lose everything. Morals need to fucking loosen up a bit.

Without even reading the article, the name of it kind of annoys me.

"Accused of being a pedophile"

Really? Who the fuck are 'they' to accuse him of anything? And how can you "accuse" someone of being a pedophile? I know what is meant, but that doesn't change the fact that a pedophile is someone who is sexually into kids, nothing more. This isn't something bad per se. If you really let so much prejudices, stupid rules and flaws in your own persona to come before proper judgement, I'm not sure if I'm all that glad that you're a (rent-a-)cop.

Hehe, this is one of many reasons why I won't get kids. Because if I actually got accused of being a paedophile for doing something like this, I'd probably not get concerned over the accusations at all but rather make sarcastic and inappropriate jokes about my supposed turn-ons for young boys and girls and rub these in the face of my accusers and basically taking the piss out of them instead of trying to plead innocent and act concerned over something so ridiculous.

I swear to god, if it happened to me then even the infamous pedo-bear would be all red-faced because of the things I'd say in contempt of my accusers. XD

But on the other hand we would all have a great laugh afterwards when you tell us about your trip to the station, where you spent 2 nights before your panicked wife could get you out.
