Elderly man robs a bank for $1 in order to get treatment for his arthritis in jail to get free health care.

Who else finds this sad that someone had to decide that prison is better for him then being free.

Desperate times I guess...but I doubt this will last. He'll probably be out rather quickly, I'm pretty sure they (the Jails) try to avoid loophole scams like this and keep jail for the people who deserve it and not people treating the justice system like a joke for surgery

The joke here is the medical system if a man needs to be incarcerated in order to live.

Well yeah, but I doubt the judge and jury ruling on this guy's case are gonna pass Country changing legislation in this.....that's a completely different topic, and while this does bring awareness to it, it doesn't change the fact that he's essentially running a scam, that I imagine won't be rewarded

True but what are they really going to do? They cant just let him go because it may cause a precident for other people and if they do let him go he will just go commit another crime. I have to say that man is absolutely brilliant.

It is a shame that the medical system is so fucked up that he actually had to resort to this though.
And that's why I've decided to avoid a career in Public Law. Seriously, how are you supposed to decide the right thing to do? It's a fucked up world, that's for sure

I'm pretty sure some will see this as "they should take away his Social Security!" or something.

Poor man, turns to crime just to get healthcare. At least he was nice about it. I hope he gets his health problems sorted before he gets out :)

And watch in amazement as the forum erupts into an argument over whether or not socialized health care is good! Hurrah!

OT: That is really, really pitiful. While our politicians are up in D.C. arguing over what to do with healthcare, stuff like this is happening to people because they can't get their crap together and stop bickering along party lines for one second. It makes me really sad, but I hope everything works out for him.

Kind of reminds me of a problem we have in our country, homeless people smashing windows and breaking cars just to get in jail.

Altough jails in my country are more like 2-star hotels tough (You can even get a PS3 and other luxuries in your cell if you show good behaviour.

Can't really blame them i geuss.

but would institutionalisation count as a psychological disease? because the only cure is prison-like environments (so, prison) but that would count as a loophole cure. plus, people could just break a leg when they commit a crime to get it seen as a loophole-exploit, so its exploiting a loophole in the prevention of the exploitation of a loophole.
and if youre trying to get arrested, at least steal more than $1, so you can hide the cash and be rich when you get out.
