To the fellow scousers in the thread: i was thinking that a bar like the Mana Bar would be better suited to just off Bold Street, by FACT. That place is full of indie bars and L1 is kinda upmarket at the moment.
That would be an ideal placement for it. It all lies on how many people can actually find FACT, since I've heard from people in Uni (who aren't local), that the FACT building is quite an annoying thing to find.

Edit:- Gah, late post ¬¬
I always find myself on that street in town, krazy house is a favourite of mine and my uni friends and i always see alot of activity in the streets surrounding it

Has anyone actually checked out the venue online? I mean it sounds good in theory, but the venue is TINY. A capacity of 100 is pretty damned small for any bar and it's free to play the consoles. I can only think the drink prices are sufficiently high and there is like a one drink minimum or something to avoid people just walking in and gaming all night on their dime.

I suppose if you are restricting it purely to gamers and drinkers and avoiding any dancing, eating or socialising then you don't need it to be that big, but new consoles, new games, etc. all sound like a total headache to keep up with given the expenses involved in running a bar anyway. Maybe there is a ticket price to get in like clubs? Either way, the economics of this don't sound particularly generous.
i was planning on charging on entry unless they sign up as members where by its a one off payment. Its for the added security because the drinking mentality in the UK is far different to Australia. I think the chances of damage by disruptive youths is incredibly likely so having CCTV and an address to find and prosecute them is a big plus, as would security on the door and inside the premises.

as for size, any size will do in my opinion, even if a place only holds 100 people socialisation and games can be prioritised. I don't see dancing as something to do in a gaming bar

I'm confused. There is a Mana Bar in Toronto, ON, Canada but its just a club like any other...
Yeah, my googling found this too, but that means that they'll never be able to expand into Canada is that Mana Bar has bought up the rights to trade under that name.

In the UK, I'd say Manchester, London and Liverpool are the big ones to go for. I'd love to see an idea such as the ManaBar spread much more widely.

Put one in Bristol! Do iiiiiiit!!
We need a place like that over here; Video Game culture needs to be brought out more socially, at least that way i can actually talk about games other than listening to people yammer on about Black Ops for half an hour.
Wherever one is made, i swear on the Fierce deity I am making a pilgrimage to it

I'd love to see a mana bar in england but somewhere with a better reputation than Manchester or Liverpool (no offence meant, i live in the east of Englandand quite often hear on the news about more attacks/ murders or other crimes). In my oppinion It would have t be in a town or city that is a large tourist destination or quite well known.

Note: Again no offence was meant about my comment on liverpool or manchester they just have a bad reputation where I am and what I said is the oppinion I have come up with based on what I have heard

It's not up to them whether or not you get a gaming bar, but it is up to them whether or not you get a ManaBar.
The rights for trading under the name "ManaBar" "The Mana Bar" and "The Manabar" are still up for sale in the EU, as is the trade mark logo they use in Australia. Someone can very very very easily just buy up those rights and open a ManaBar that looks exactly the same with exactly the same drinks and ManaBar Australia can't do anything about it.

This was the case with the two "Budweiser" beer manufacturers, hence why one of them now has the tag line "The real Budweiser taste" (or something similar) despite a legal court case, no laws were broken.
I find that shocking and a large oversight. Surely the first thing they would have done is buy out all rights and take out trademarks that are relevant to their business.

Well, someone should either bring this to their attention or capitalise on the info. Either way. It's a win win.

I'm sure they have done in Australia, but its a region by region thing.

Yeah, but I mean internationally. Or at least in regions that are logical expansions (ie. Europe and North America)

true, probably would have been the ideal thing to do, but these requests can take time and you have to actually make use of them after a certain time from purchasing them or they're deemed dormant and are opened up again (which, yes, you can just keep re-purchasing them but its very costly to secure many regions with you're trademark and company name and the actual request itself takes alot of paperwork and time)

but heck, their mistake, i plan to capitalise on it.
