what the hell?

first off, easiest A of your life, and secondly going in as the "party pooper" with such a negative attitude won't help at all, its a chance to get away from class and such to just have some physical fun, and you don't even have to try that hard at all to get an A.

Unless you were near mega bullied (which shouldn't be any different because it's P.E., if your getting bullied your getting bullied, not because of some stupid class) i don't see how p.e. is such a "horrible" class to take.
It's not the class. It's the people IN the class.

and how does that differ from other classes?

Neanderthals were actually quite intelligent.
We have a percentage of neanderthal DNA in our make up, and evidence has been discovered that they were using jewellery and tools around the same time Homo Sapiens was.
Scientists thought because of their large, overhanging brow that they were stupid (probably a throwback to phrenology).

Well, if you have not seen the earlier comment, I am in a class with teen pregnating douchbags that do drugs. I do not like being around these type of citizens. Could you say the same thing?

I honestly don't see the problem with P.E. Class. I'm the last person you'd find doing physical activity for recreation, of my own accord, and I found the class to be pretty "fun". Maybe it was because I had got on the teacher's good side by being one of the only guys in the Health class that actually cared and tried. Maybe it's because I didn't just give up at the notion of being "forced" to do physical activity. Maybe it's because the class was a nice breather in between a day of English and Science.

So...uh...in short. Mandatory P.E. is great when it's only 1 year and a semester long. Other than that...why?

okay while i'm not saying i disagree, and i'm not saying i didn't have similar people in my team sports class (10th year level p.e. course at my school), as they were d-bags, but if you own up to who you are and what you are, they have nothing in their disposal to bring you down, being on their level allows them to mess with you in stupid ways, and that what makes you hate them and the class, don't make the class something to dread going to everyday, make it something worthwhile.

I think it's a good idea. While people have presented the obvious health attributes, there's also the fact that it's a mental break from the daily grind of books, it's been shown the more active you are, the better grades you get. It does not have to be the usual concept of chasing a basketball or push ups either. There are a few options that are available.

We use to have 75 minutes a day, second class of four a day and it was awesome. Not only did it help with my heath conscious lifestyle, it was nice to see kids learning that sitting on your ever-growing hind end will do NOTHING for you. We hear all kinds of groups pushing for fitness for a variety of reasons and this is a good way to help promote than in the minds of children while they still can be changed. I'm no remarkably skinny kid, I'm carrying a few extra pounds, but even packing a bit of junk in the trunk, you can still be fit and healthy. (To a certain limit).

Sure, not everyone's going to enjoy it, just like not everyone loves math, you still have to do it. I say it should not just be mandatory for those up to grade 10 (As it is here in Ontario, Canada) but it should be mandatory up to graduation. And not just this once a week for an hour garbage they implement into the kindergarten to grade 9 nonsense.

As someone who is underweight (according to the BMI)and as someone who played a sport in high school (Water Polo/Swim)I think the mandatory P.E. for high schoolers is a good idea. The high school i attended only required 2 years so it was not a huge deal. I think there should be more options between weight training and sports but since 1 out of every 4 children are overweight in America, I think its here to stay.

I found PE to be pointless, unless it's point was to waste time and annoy me. All it was at my school was weight training and sports. If it truly is for exorcise, why can't I do it in a manner I find fun? I enjoy swimming, biking, hiking, and climbing on anything scalable but there is nothing like that in PE. The only think I found remotely enjoyable in PE was pissing off the jocks.
Problem with many various forms is that they cost money and most schools don't have money...running is free :)

I did it and I have a bum leg. That being said, I barely passed because my teacher managed to be spectacularly stupid about it. "Everybody can run", Mm, really?

Although, I did get bigger from it. AW YEAH MUSCLE MASS, complamenting my awesome strength.
I didn't learn anything though.

Your right, but I don't do sports. I've had somewhat of a terrible childhood with them.
I was in a softball team growing up. I was the worst player on the team. My father even said so as if to make me feel bad. The day the trophies came out, my father knowingly didn't pick up the trophy. It happend a second time the year after. About 5 years later, I joined a soccer team. I was one of the best. It rained the day the trophies came. So I just said to myself, "Screw it, sports is not for me." Nowadays, I don't critise people for doing sports or being good at them. It's just the attitude of the player behind the mask that makes me aggrivated.

I think I got sidetracked.

Yes, I can handle my own. I even duked with the school bully last year. THE school bully, I just decided I would speak for every one and just give a good one two. I received OSS for the endeavor. My dad gave me a high five every day of OSS bcause of what I did.

Sooo... I think that answers both questions I think?

while that's awful to hear, trophies and being the best aren't the point of sports, at least in my eyes, its about having some fun, proving to yourself that you tried your best, and maybe making some bonds along the way (me and a ton of my mates were on the same team for soccer and basketball, and having fun together on the field definitely helped off the field with respect and whatnot)

as you've proven your point with the school bully, just stay adamant with who you are and live up to what your capable of, don't be ashamed, it's what makes you what you are, and i'm sure p.e. might surprise you and be a decent amount of fun.

and as you have pointed out you are a freshman, perhaps pick-up soccer again? never to late, especially as a freshman, to give it a shot. The worst that happens? you leave the field knowing you tried and gave it an effort, rather than not trying at all.

In a country with as many weight-related health issues as America, yeah, mandatory PE makes total sense to me.

Though, really, you could make the same argument against mandatory school in general as the first post makes against mandatory PE. It's our life. Our mind. We have enough power to decide what we want to do with out minds, correct?

It's mandatory so that kids have some exposure to physical exercise. And really, needing one credit (I needed one and a half credits) is way too low. it should be two or two and a half, really.

I think this is the only thing I miss from high school. After I finished school, I've just been sitting on my ass all day. (not that I've gotten fat or anything)
Plus there's a lot of theory as well, proper eating, how and when to train and so on. There's so much more to it than just keeping children from getting fat.

Its just one of many flaws of the education system.
Okay I am going to disagree with that especially since you are letting your own personal bias known right off the bat. There is a point to having mandatory physical education and I wish we had some more mandatory education like workshop and cooking for everyone. You wonder why the US alone in every state is past 20% in obese rate?

I wasn't a fan of PE myself but I understood it's purpose which is to maintain a certain level of activity that might of ignored by the homelife which much like Teddy roosevelt I support that vigorous lifestyle.

No I acknowledge that what you didn't like was the same part that didn't make me a fan of PE was the social aspect of PE. We didn't like having to share a class with the guy that would openly mock us for screwing something up. That in itself is completely separate from what the point of PE is for and what it does for our bodies.

In either case, it doesn't even matter if you are good at the sport but it is still important to be active. If anything I can confidently say that high school and when I got to my four-year college was when I was in my best shape because of how active the schools made me and when I decide to walk everywhere when I was in college. After you graduate and have to look for a job and essentially manage life, you really lose a lot of time to actually get some exercise and standing all day at a retail store doesn't really help because you may be tired but it doesn't help you become stronger.
PE was around long before America was the fat country. We should never have become fat if PE was actually working.

Why PE is bad:
-Often creates awkward situations and lowers self esteem
-Does not promote exercise among those who really need it, those who are already athletic are the ones who do well, not those who do not
-Holds people back regardless of intellect. School is for bettering your education. Why should I fail because Im not active?

Also, I think PE is really just a result of the US holding sports in too high regard.
I could get into a rant about how bad it is, but that may be a bit off topic.

Gym doesnt work. It should not be mandatory. If I fail gym, I should not fail high school and thus have my entire life possibly ruined.

Edit: And bias? Its not bias, its first hand experiance.
