All your arguments are useless in the face of the greatness of cheese. Cheese in all it's cheesy goodness is the apex of human thought and achievement.

Seriously though, I think spoken language is our greatest achievement. Without it the world we live in would not be possible.

Electronics. Due to computers, humanity has advanced so far within the last century we're now at places we hardly even dreamed of 150 years ago.
The most terrible achievement? Easy. The atom bomb and Wal*Mart.

Language.
/thread

If it wasn't for language, we wouldn't be anywhere near as advanced as we are now.
1) Is that really an accomplishment? Or a (bi?)product of evolution?
2) "If it wasn't for _______, we wouldn't be anywhere near as advanced as we are now."
The problem with this is that you can fill in many things here: opposible thumbs, eyes, agriculture, tools, etc
3) Unless you include the language of the universe (mathematics) I dont think I really can agree.
1. Maybe it's a byproduct to an extent, but it was developed to communicate beyond what a supposed primal language could.
2. True, there are many other things you could fill in that blank, but if we didn't have language we wouldn't have developed civilization, culture, or any of the other many things that set us apart from typical animals (yes, we're animals, but we have developed some differences). Language (then again, agriculture is pretty important) is what I'd consider to be our greatest accomplishment to put in that blank.
3. Don't really have a problem with that one, but humanity did develop its own languages and used them, and you couldn't count the language of the universe as humans wouldn't have invented it, only discovered it and assigned names to numbers.
