Music has been 'manufactured' forever. How is the pop idol show any different than any other band on the radio? Being selected on a show doesn't make you any more or less talented either. And based on sales and popularity, it's quite apparent that lots of people like pop music (hence the name), so let them listen to it. End result, you are less likely to worry about concerts for your favorite band selling out before you get a ticket. win win win

I was going to post, but Furburt, FargoDog, and Nickolai77 have said exactly what I intended.

On-topic: They like it because it sounds good to them. People like what they like.

It's easy to listen to and often catchy. As hard as it is to believe, that's really all most people want from their music. They don't care whether it's manufactured or authentic, they just want something that's easy to dance to, maybe something catchy to listen to on the radio on the long drive home from work. There's really nothing wrong with that.

Incidentally, I always liked S-Club 7 and the Spice Girls, and they're about as manufactured as music gets.

Pop music annoys me because music is an art, and the pop music industry treats it like a business.

But while I think it's crap, most other people like it and they want to listen to it. It wouldn't make money if there wasn't a market for it. It's a shame that "better" music isn't appreciated as much, but you can't tell people what they should or shouldn't like.

Lowest common denominator is what they go for. As much as I don't like pop music, if the person singing actually has a good voice, the lyrics are both not too shallow and decently written, and there is just the tiniest bit of interesting to the beat then I wouldn't say I "dislike" it.

As far as the manufacturedness [sub](yes manufacturedness)[/sub] of it, I say meh. Movies and video games can be pretty manufactured as well and I enjoy them.

I do find it a little bit pleasing that most of the "winners" of competitions like American Idol or w/e don't actually remain famous for too long. Partly due to the nature of pop music I suppose. Also partly due to those people actually not being "good" at pop music to begin with though.
