So I heard on the radio today that Mark Hamil has been approached to reprise his role as Luke Skywwalker in the new Star Wars films. I couldn't see a news post or thread here already.

You can see the article here:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/...k-Hamill-in-talks-for-new-Star-Wars-film.html

In the article it states that Hamil has said:

Hamill added that he'd want "the whole gang back" on the new film: "Carrie and Harrison and Billy Dee and Tony Daniels, everybody that's around from the original. I want to make sure that everybody's on board here, rather than just one."
So what do you think Escapists? How do you feel about these original actors coming back? First Han Solo and now Luke Skywalker (Hamil's 61 at this point and Harrison Ford's 70) Would you like an expanded role or just a cameo appearance? Or perhaps you'd rather that Star Wars would just pass away gracefully? You decide.

I am against it.

Simply because the only time period I can see them telling the story of with the actors at the age they are, is the Yuuzhan Vong era (or perhaps the Darth Caedus era). And those era's aren't really very movie friendly IMO.
And telling those stories leaves a whole lot of in between exposition to be told in the first movie, leaving not a lot of room for the first movies actual story.

Also I wanted Grand Admiral Thrawn on DA BIG SCREEN!

I know a lot of SW fans will spin in their graves at me for saying this, but I think recasting Luke, Han, and Leia would have been the better way to go.

EDIT:
I see them telling the tale of Darth Lumiya and Darth Caedus, if only to have an ULTIMATE SITH BADDEH! because ya know Star Wars is about the force and the light sabers. And NOTHING ELSE.
Never mind that Grand Admiral Thrawn is a MUCH more interesting villian, and Darth Caedus is pretty much Palpatine 2.0... *sigh*

What nobody is expecting is that Mark Hamill will actually play the role of the Joker. Take that, Star Wars Universe!

None of the original cast has aged very well. I can't see any of them filling anything more than "mentor" roles. Maybe Han could be the new Jabba or something, but still piloting the rusty bucket of a ship smuggling spices at his age? That would just be comedic. Lea has definite leadership potential. And Luke... he'd pretty much be Yoda v 2.0.

Unless, of course they're all going to be digitally inserted so they still look young, like Arny in Terminator: Salvation, and they just voice act for the roles. Yeah, that's an even worse idea...

I would love for him to return to Batman: TAS for some more epic laughs and dastardly schemes.

They've said they're ignoring the expanded universe stuff.

OT: If they have Luke/Leia/Han as like, respectable mentor figures to new protagonists, that'd be fine. If they pull any shit like Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (haha look how OLD this bastard is! you tell 'em, Shia Laboof!) that'll be really annoying.

Honestly I'm just trying not to care until the movies come out, but it's really hard.

I like Mark's caveat of reuniting the whole gang back. I'm just not sure how they would fit them all, aged and stuff, in the new movies. I feel they wouldn't be able to hold the show together, and that they'll cast some Shia LaBeouf/Megan Fox types to boost the teen demographic...

I really hope this doesn't go the way of Star Trek Generations. You know, when only a fraction of the original cast came on board because of the money and the rest stayed away because they didn't like the script...

I am curious to see how the movie will turn out but I am not very optomistic. As for having an old Luke Skywalker? Do it right or not at all. I dread the thought of it just being a cameo or something.

Yeah, Hamill really doesn't look the part of an aging and wise jedi master these days. I mean, at least Harrison still looks like a rogue badass to some degree.

Mmm...I'm not enthusiastic about that. It just seems like too much time has passed for them to reprise their roles. That said, I'll wait until I see what they plan to do with the characters before I pass judgement.

not that i am all for luke, solo or any of the original cast in the new ones, i just wanted to mention that luke was the one who killed lumiya so if you are going to have her in the stories having luke around would make sense.

yeah, just like he looked and played like the rugged badass known as indiana jones. the guy is in his fucking early 70s.

while age isn't necessarily a requirement for action heros, harrison just doesn't pull it off anymore. granted they could bring solo back in some fashion as a mentor or straight up father to jacen / jaina, but leave him and the rest out of the grand theatrics.

Ascarus. That is true but the focus of those novels seems to be more "the kids" of the Skywalker-Solo clan rather than the Parentals.

Disney will be on the ball and working hard to avoid the pitfalls and pratfalls committed by Lucas et al during the Prequels. The fact that they're ditching the often ridiculous EU future is a MAJOR sign that they're seriously thinking this thing through--especially since they're talking about a trilogy and several stand alone movies.

Having the old gang back could work if they do it right. No problem.

My only real concern with this happens to be the same one I had when Lucas started the Prequels: What if one of them dies before they finish?

Well since Carrie is currently borderline mental I don't really see her making a return. But Harrison, Mark, Billy Dee and Tony certainly could make it back even for cameos. IF they could get the entire group back, it would be awesome. I am very glad to see Disney will not be making the mistake of casting someone else in the roles, if they don't do it, they get written out. Good decision.
