We all know what a guitar looks like, but what of the one who makes it live?
Some know them as The Axe Drivers, or the Man Made Movers of Metal, the Five Fingered Demons, the Country Born Ramblers, Fighters of Joey the Six Armed Octopus, or even The All Mighty Plucker of Strings.

Simply put, what do you think makes a great guitar player?

For me it is not so much about skill or speed, I think the main thing required is to be original (apparently that isn't so easy) and to be able to create an interesting sound.

(side note: this is not a discussion of what makes a good Guitar Hero player. Otherwise known as the 11inch plastic wanderer)

Innovation, or a unique sound.

This is not to say that any guitarist that does something a bit weird is great, I'm just saying that what separates an amazing guitarist from a decent one in my view, is innovation/unique sound.

So I basically agree with you, after all there have been tens of thousands of guitarists that can play anything at all. That doesn't make them great, that makes them technically proficient (which is of course enviable).

The personality implemented into the sound they create.
And how good they can perform on stage, that's for sure. Even though he's not a guitarrist, Jason Newstead really has some interesting performances on live (when he was in Metallica at least)

Hmm..

Playing guitar to an amzing standard.

Hmm, being amzing does help.

Guitar takes skill, feeling, and creativity.

This is gonna sound a little cliche, but I think soul is what makes a guitar player great.
He obviously has to have a certain amount of talent and skill, but I think soul makes all the difference.

Winning at Guitar Hero. Because it's an accurate and fair way to judge your musical ability.

Seriously though, I'd say when people talk about a style of playing and they use your name, like Brian Mayish licks etc.

individuality, with draws from other guitar players, but individuality marks the difference between a good guitarist and an excellent one.

1. Smash his guitar on stage and set it on fire

or

2. Beat the hardest song on 100% on the hardest difficulty on Guitar hero

or

3. making memorable songs

Being a guitar player myself, I think that, like the other people on this thread have said, originality is a big part of it. It's not the whole thing, but like Spanner207 said, it does determine the difference between a good one and a great one. If a guitarist can not only write his own songs, but also play them well, they are better then someone who can just play a song well. That's why I consider myself to be better then most people at my school. I may not be able to play Even Flow or Carry on My wayward Son, but I can write my own solos and my own songs. And they sound good.

Sorry if I sound like an asshole. Not trying to brag or anything.

P.S: Fighters of the Six Arm octopus? WTF!?!?!?
