We all know what a guitar looks like, but what of the one who makes it live?
Some know them as The Axe Drivers, or the Man Made Movers of Metal, the Five Fingered Demons, the Country Born Ramblers, Fighters of the Six Armed Octopus, or even The All Mighty Plucker of Strings.

Simply put, what do you think makes a great guitar player?

For me it is not so much about skill or speed, I think the main thing required is to be original (apparently that isn't so easy) and to be able to create an interesting sound.

(side note: this is not a discussion of what makes a good Guitar Hero player. Otherwise known as the 11inch plastic wanderer)

1. Smash his guitar on stage and set it on fire

or

2. Beat the hardest song on 100% on the hardest difficulty on Guitar hero

or

3. making memorable songs

A sign of a good guitar player is the ability to play the guitar.
A sign of a great guitar player is the ability to play it well.
A sign of god, is having a guitar in your hand and the name "Brian May OR Van Halen".

There, now it looks more appealing.

Seriously though, the mark of a great guitar player, I think, is innovation, standing out from the crowd.

Ironically, the idea of innovation making a great guitar player is not original in the slightest.

Originality is a big part but also emotion. Just because you play fast doesn't mean you are good (atleast that's how I feel). Songs don't need lyrics to be emotional and I don't think that many guitarists know that.

Jack Bruce's bass sometimes overshadows the rest of the music, especially live. Cream live is my favourite thing to listen to, they're all so good.

yeah definately being unique is more important than being good...
imo... if your shit at guitar and make a good song out of it... thats a perfectly good guitar player to me...

but i do have very ungeneric tastes in music... i guess my opinions not that valid

To be a good guitarist, and musician in general, you really only need two things: Rhythm and Soul.

Example: DragonForce. yeah they're sooper technical but they have no soul, and onstage they have no rhythm.

You speak truth, anone can improv a solo but love and passion is what makes an amazing guitar player, even if its jsut a catchy 3 chord riff (my avatar may give away that i am a fan of catchy pop punk and similar stuff).
