Spiderman? Kraven's Last Hunt. I stopped reading Marvel seriously after that because I knew it wouldn't get any better. Also DC at the time had the best series going in Ostrander's Suicide Squad and then Morrison's Animal Man and Doom Patrol, then there was Ennis' Hitman and I've rarely looked back.

If you read the Civil War stuff don't miss reading Moon Knight's The Bottom, if only for the awesome Cap cameo.

What are the classic Marvel superhero stories that I should read?

Two things
1 - I'm looking for stories that are easily available in collected graphic novel/trade paperback format
2 - My preferred heroes are Spider-man,X-Men,Iron Man,Thor and The Avengers as a collective but feel free to suggest other heroes/crossovers etc.
I don't know if it really counts as a classic because it came out about 10 years ago, but Spider-Man: Blue is one of my favourite comics of all time, and easily my favourite Spider-Man story. Easily available in a collected edition, it's less a superhero comic and more a love story between Peter, Gwen and MJ. Great art, great story. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I surpised only one other person has recommended Joss Whedon's Run on the astonishing X-Men. If you must read any X-Men tale, it's absolutely his run on the X-Men. Another great tale is the House of M story. It's more a Wolverine tale, but it's an excellent one at that.

For Spider-Man, Dan Slotts run has always been great fun. I highly recommend Spider-Man: Big Time. I'm currently getting his new Superior Spider-Man HC (Hardcover), the one that has Dr. Ock as Spider-Man (or Spock as he's called by some fans). Also, Check out Ultimate Spider-Man. Absolutely love it.

For Thor, I've been hearing a lot of great things on J. Michael Straczynski's run on Thor. I've recommend Thor: The Mighty Avenger, which partially inspired the first movie, where he's banished from Asgard.

Exiles, all of it is available as tpb's and it is one of the most original series that Marvel has ever produced.

Well by classic I really meant well regarded stories rather than just old ones so I'll definitely take your recommendation on board

Er, third-ed for Joss/Cassaday's run on Astonishing X-Men. I'm a bit of a Whedon nut and I'm tempted to say it's one of, if not the, best thing he's put his name to. Great slice of Whedon, even better slice of X-Men.

Civil War clearly divides opinion, but I still think it's great, and am pissed off we'll never get the chance to see it as part of the MCU.

Has anyone mentioned Millar/Hitch's The Ultimates [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ultimates_(comic_book)], yet? If not, it's pretty much an essential read. Stunning art, too, and the whole thing beats the shite out the crappy animation (Ultimate Avengers) that was based off it.

I just got Truth Red White and Black 1-7 since it was Black history month. A comic book series similar to the Tuskegee experiment. They collect a group of African Americans to test out a Super Solider serum after they lost the one that created Captain America. Props to marvel for doing a comic like this. Its really good.

Everything Jason Aaron has written is incredible.
His Wolverine run and Thor run ( God butcher, God bomb etc.) are among my favourite comics.

All the Marvel Now X-men stuff is pretty damn good as well. Especially Battle of the Atom.

And last but not least: the Captain Marvel comics (Carol Danvers) by Kelly Sue Deconnick.

Throw some other ones out there that other people haven't recommended yet...

Ed Brubaker's run on Captain America (a lot of which the upcoming Captain America: Winter Soldier is based on) is really excellent, though a little broken up by the crapsack that is the Civil War Mega Arc.

Matt Fraction's current Hawkeye Series is pretty damn brilliant stuff, though it's ongoing.

Warren Ellis's "Nextwave" is hilarious and awesome, also only 2 trades long...

I just wanted an excuse to use that Catbug gif. You could always watch [a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/BravestWarriors"]Bravest Warriors[/a].

You could try the Preacher series, it's a solid series. Incredibly dark, full of dark humour but also very expensive books.
