Marvel vs DC

Okay, probably my first New Topic that isn't a joke topic. *CRACKS KNUCKLES, SIPS RUM*

I am, admittedly, a "casual" comics fan. I'd loved to be able to get into them hardcore but I lack the money/time (in that order) to properly become a proper nerd. As such I pretty much wander into my local comic book storm, buy 50 dollars of whatever I know I'll like and maybe 10 of which I take risks on. The plus of being a casual fan of comics is that I can enjoy pretty much anything in the format, I love superheroes and comic books in general so much that I can pretty much enjoy anything.

However, I am a total cartoon nerd. Even in my newly 20s I only ever swap between the news and children programming (mostly cartoon network these days, in my youth I grew up on Nickelodeon, Kids WB and Fox Kids). So naturally I was exposed to the awesomeness of the DC Animated Universe and the Marvel equal. I loved both, but DC was clearly the favorite as it was better planned out (plus I find out later, Marvel killed out their Animated Universe which I won't lie, hurt me a tad that knowing the fictional characters I grew up watching were dead.)

More often then not, I've heard/asked. Marvel vs DC? My natural response is DC, I've grown up watching their heros and for all I know the heroes I grew up watching on TV are still alive. Also I'm a die hard Batman fanboy, and I can reasonably believe he could just about beat anyone in the comic universe (provided he'd survive the first encounter, fucker could beat galacticus if he had a week to prepare). Though I acknowledge the majority of their DC's heroes are fairly to... boring? They're always the best at everything.

And don't get me wrong, I have no problem with Marvel. I love reading Spiderman, Ghost Rider is something I've been dabbling in for quite a while as well as Ms. Marvel. I like that they're characters have flaws but... aside from Spiderman they lack a character I love as much as Batman.

tl;Dr: Why do some/you say Marvel is better then DC and vice versa?

P.S. Grandest of all ironies is that my favorite comic is Dark Horse's The Mask. Unlimited Power coupled with unlimited psychosis.

I think DC. For a lot of reasons.

As of today, DC without question. Because Marvel is now owned by Disney and I will have nothing to do with a corporation that funded nazis and has recently been in the biz of sexualizing preteens.

But before the Disney aquisition I would still say DC. Marvel has long had a problem with oversaturation. Even after the events of the House of M when the Marvel universe was substantially trimmed, there are still far too many chars and having so many the char development for each individual is rather lacking. In my estimation, even in light of cornball chars like Superman and Wonderwoman, but you know Marvel has just as many Like Thor, who in his own world is cool, but clumped together with other members of marvel is completely out of place.

I think the battle between the two is best summed up between the battle between Batman and Ironman. Ironman has style, Batman has substance and I usually lean more toward substance.

Anyway its all moot, because yanno, No superhero gets more awesome than DarkClaw.

As much as I love Batman (and oh man do I love Batman) I gotta go with Marvel on this one. It doesn't really mean much, I love them both, but Marvel just has more heroes and villains that I really like. Although, as you may have guessed, my favorite comic book character of all time is Batman.

My problems with DC are that the Superheros rarely deal with real life problems. Batman aside, many DC characters didn't deal with real human issues. Just look at Superman. He came from a happy household, got a good job, a beautiful, intelligent woman, and what were his real stresses? At first, there weren't really any, outside of what was imposed on him by a super-villain.

Marvel superheroes tended to have a ton of real life issues that made them very easy to relate to. Look at Spider-man's success. It's because he was an awkward teenager who had trouble fitting in, couldn't seem to get his dream girl, always had money problems, and had troubles in his real life that were complicated by being a superhero. In a weird way, super-villains didn't stress him out as much as his real life did.

Batman is one of the few age old DC hero with the deep down problems that most Marvel characters had from their inception, and by far the most popular because of it. Also, he has most of the best villains.

But overall, I would have to say Marvel because they tend to be easier to relate to, though Batman is a shining star of DC.

I like Marvel way better. One major reason...unorigionallity. Atleast with names. how many mans, boys, womans and girls must there be? I went through the list of one DC super group, and about 90% had their name being ----man/woman/boy/girl

Plus X-Men is so awesome.
Double Plus Superman is lame in all ways. His Marvel alternative, Captain America though is awesome, even more so because he is the total opposite (depitse strong American overtones). He is super human, literally. He is the best a human could be, but still goes toe to toe with all the super powered baddies. While Supermans flawless ness is a flaw itself.

(I would never turn down a free DC comic though, I dont want to seem like I HATE DC, I just find Marvel to be much better)

what about, ya know, discovering the fact that he's adopted? That his real parents are not only dead, but his home planet blown up? Lois being more interested in Superman then Clark Kent? That he could enslave the Earth just as easily if not more so then he saves it, and there's no reason why he couldn't. He just chooses not too.

Yeah I'm reaching with those.

Don't think I know much about DC apart from Superman and Batman. Read some Marvel comics while growing up, and I really liked the whole mutant thingy(who doesn't?) so I guess my vote goes to Marvel.
The gotta stop mass producing the movies though.

I don't take sides on this one...especially since I'm still peeking at Archie's Sonic comics from time to time even though I'm still wondering if Ian laughed his butt off after hearing the name of the new Metroid game. (Bonus points to the ubergeeks out there that know the reason why.)

Truthfully, I think both comics have come up with some unforgettable characters and some great story arcs. Yeah, both tend to rewrite and retcon continuities as if, as future Bruce Wayne put it in that one Justice League Unlimited episode, "time has become fluid". But...both comics are trying to go for some decent stories, and sadly this meant having to rewrite history so previous mistakes were removed.

Still...the gamemaster in me wonders if DC is going to do a Mortal Kombat crossover arc and if Marvel is going to do a Capcom crossover arc.

DC.
Mainly because DC has/had more diversity of genre.

Over the course of my life (I'm old), I've been able to enjoy a lot of different things from DC.

Heroes. I was a big fan of the original run of Teen Titans. A lot believable, vulnerable heroes there.
Pulp Heroes. They had The Shadow.
Modern/Paranormal. Swamp Thing, and DCs Vertigo had Shade the Changing Man, Hellblazer, and Sandman.
Crime. They have 100 Bullets, plus they picked up Ms. Tree after it left Renegade Press...for that I will always love them.
Sword and Sorcery. It was DC that had Warlord, Arion, Amethyst.
And perhaps most importantly for me, they ran all those great horror books in the 80s and earlier, including my favorites: House of Mystery, House of Secrets, and The Witching Hour.

For me, there is just no competition.

I love both. My collection is pretty much split 50/50 down the middle. However, lately, I think that DC is on much better form with writers like Geoff Johns at the helm. Batman has always been my favourite hero as I find his world to be the most interesting (with a mix of gangsters and crazies as his collection of foes and the interesting relationships he has with his supporting characters etc.) and so that's a nod in favour of DC. I also think DC handle their giant crossovers a lot better. Marvel's Sexret Invasion was fun but ultimately disappointing whereas Infinite Crisis was fantastic from start to finish. The current Green Lantern story (Sinestro Corps War, Blackest Night etc.) is also, in my opinion, the biggest and best saga in comic books right now
So, yeah, as it stands right now, DC is my favourite. All their current stuff blows Marvel out the water. Overall? I love both equally. It often depends on who's writing the issues. For example, the reason Secret Invasion was a slight flop is because Brian Michael Bendis' dialogue was awkward and tragic whereas The Ultimates (written by the genius that is Mark Millar) was outstandingly witty and interesting

Tl;dr - Right now, DC. Overall, equal

I don't think I've ever bought either a Marvel or DC comic, but for what it's worth, I prefer Marvel. I just prefer all the major heroes over DC's big hitters.
It still seems like yesterday when Spider-Man was the shiznit to me and I'd feel like disowning anyone who disagreed.

I don't see why everything has to be a competition? There's a great Justice League/Avengers crossover, that's a few years old, which points out the prospective differences between the two universes. It's great, if nothing else to see Thor batter Superman with mjolnir.

I read more Marvel though. I disagree that DC handles it's crossover events well... they're fairly convoluted, and bar Blackest Night, are fairly unremarkable. Dark Avengers, which was happening at the same time, was all kinds of awesome. Also, Marvel has far better female characters and diversity than DC. Wonder Woman is great and all, but that's just one person.

DC wins on bad guy quality relating to a single character, with Batman. He has the best bad guys. Spiderman and Fantastic Four have some good 'uns, but the quantity and quality of Batman's enemies in unbeatable.

I've grown up on Marvel because my dad did, so he shared all those characters with me. I like batman a lot too, but I just find the number of DC characters that I find interesting disapoints me. However, even though I love the cast of Marvel much more, I don't know if I'm a big fan of their current stuff. From what I heard from a friend, shadowcat has committed suicide by phasing through the earth? Thats just stupid. It just... feels like the writers are tearing the characters I've grown up on apart.
Granted, when I read the 'Titans' comics staring Deathstroke, maybe I don't feel like the writers are screwing with him because I have known very very little about the character beforehand, so everything that happens with him still feels 'canon' while everything in the marvel universe feels like anything they do ruins it.

Granted, again, this is purely because of what I've heard and grown up on. I personally loved Age of Apocolyps, and Civil War sounds very interesting, I never thought of Civil War as Canon, just a spin-off. (But then again, I haven't read it.)
So my vote... who knows. I prefer Marvel's history more, I like their heroclix more and am much more interested in seeing their movies, but I think that everything that DC did with the Blackest night is on such a large scale, I am a little awed by it and am interested in reading it, and seeing the fate of characters I've never cared for before.

Sorry for my ramble. As a last note, if you haven't guessed, I have read very few comics as of late and am only now getting back into it with 'Titans.'
