I just re-watched Captain American: Winter Soldier and the movie mentions Strange twice, he already exists in the Marvel cinematic universe.

I'm so happy they ditched the idea of "origin stories". It's been the same formula for a long while.

1a. Hero gets powers and motivation.
1b. Hero had powers and decided to use them.
2. Second act consist of him doing stuff while the villain plots in the background.
3. It's the big clash between hero and villain in the 3rd act.
What you've described is a basic story structure, and isn't exclusive to Origin Stories.
I know, but super hero movies use them frequently and blandly

Iron Man, Batman Begins, Spider man, etc. Sure, it feels like it fits their characters. However, it becomes?like a cliché. You basically have A+B+C= Story. Some superhero movies did twists with that formula in order to mix it up.

I liked how the Hulk did it. It was only for the first few minutes and the first act consisted to show how you manage your life when you're the Hulk. The whole concept of Thor wasn't getting the motivation to be brave with your powers, but being wise with them.

Why stop doing that with Dr.Strange? he's not exactly an A-lister. Drop the origin crap for the guys like Spiderman Bamham and the Hulk. But at least give someone like Dr.Strange a concise 10 minute explanation.

Only Atlantis. Though we should have established Universe, Infinity, and the original movie apocrypha as well. And probably should od a pre-emptive strike on the new movies.

Especially since it's the same story every time. They're not going to tell a radically different version of Spider-Man or Superman (I guess Man of Steel tried, but it still largely covers the same strokes).

Makes perfect sense, that's how he started out in the comics too. His origin story came around later by fan demand.

Probably a good choice. Dr. Strange's origin story isn't very interesting and doesn't actually have a lot to do with setting him up to be Dr. Strange, Sorcerer Supreme and mystic defender of Earth and its environs.

On the other hand, it does point out that unlike most of these other spandex clad so-called-doctors he is in fact a legit medical doctor.

I think the main reason that many superhero franchises have the second one generally considered to be the best (Spiderman 2, Superman 2, The Dark Knight etc.)is that an origin story has to tread over quite a lot of familiar ground that isn't that compelling.

They get powers for some (usually quite dumb) reason, have a training-new-powers-montage, agonising over what to do with new powers (why me? etc.), early crime-fighting attempts, acquiring a costume, adjusting to a double life (keeping secrest from family etc.), hero motivation (i.e. someone they love gets killed/ kidnapped).

It's rare for any of these things to be especially different for different heroes. They have to have a good 40 minutes or so before the real focus of the story and the villain start doing anything.

Well I hope they don't gloss over his origin. I actually really like Dr. Stranges origin story. I'm thinking maybe they'll do what they did for The Incredible Hulk and kinda use the prologue and intro credits to explain it and then cut to him literally years later already being the Hulk.

Overall I'm okay with this news though. I mean Winter Soldier kinda made it sound like our friend Stephen Strange has already been up to some stuff.

I remember the animated film they made for him.
I bought that DVD solely based on the fact that the guy who is secretly evil actually says the following line before the reveal that he's done so:

"There is only one solution. We must kill the children."

My wife, my friends and I still quote that whenever appropriate.

yay for no origin story. sick of those things. we all know how they go. I think Incredible Hulk had the right idea by having it all in a montage in the opening credits
