i'd like to add that i think it's really encouraging that Bioware is handling the sequel themselves, instead of handing it off to Obsidian like the follow-ups to Knights of the Old Republic and Neverwinter Nights.

Fully agreed. Obsidian takes the fantastic example Bioware makes, and wrecks it.

But I knew that would be the case with Mass Effect. It's designed to be a trilogy, all made by Bioware. Sweet.

I'm guessing that they'll probably have the starting part of the story be branches that narrow down (generally) into one pathway with subtle differences depending on your ending from the first game.

in Knights of the Old Republic II you had to tell an NPC how the last game ended i.e. good or evil, male/female Revan, etc.... i expect something similar with ME2...

Players who have not played the first Mass Effect will start a new character in Mass Effect 2, and will be brought up to speed on the story elements that have taken place thus far in the series. It is highly recommended, however, that people play the first game before playing the sequel.

Only difference being in KOTORII you weren't playing as the same character as in KOTOR so perhaps not.

Wait I thought they said a while back that we should hold onto our Mass Effect 1 data? Damn I was hoping for some interesting progression...unless Shepard et. al appear as supporting cast which would still be awesome.

Thats exactly what they're still saying. They said players who have not played ME1 will have to create a character. Players with ME1 data can transfer that data to ME2. We still don't know how that is going be worked out though.

Close. IGN AU said that EA stated on a conference call that ME2 isn't going to be released until "some time" in 2010. Boo, hiss!

However, some footage of it is expected to be shown at the Game Developers Conference in March.
