So ive been playing Mass Effect 2 nonstop for the past few days and just realized that the game won't work without a CD in the tray. I was hoping that needing a CD to run a game was starting to fade off into oblivion, but I guess I was wrong. Anyone know if there is any way to modify the files to get it to run without a CD? Would be nice not having to worry about it.

Um... it's not as though it's really hard to open the drive and insert the disc. They probably made the disc required for anti-piracy reasons.

Do you need the drive for a cup-holder or something? It irritates the pirates, so just endure it.

It barely takes a pirate any time at all to bypass it. All it does is piss off customers.
Still, it make them work just a bit more.

My bad for not having a deep knowledge of piracy.

I used to play a "technically" pirated version of oblivion. That is to say, I owned the game legitimately, but you needed the disk in to play, and for some reason my drive had stopped reading disks properly. So, in order to keep playing without needing to pay again for the game, I downloaded an ISO of the disk off some pirate site via torrent and installed Daemon tools. Now if I wanted to play oblivion (or starcraft, which I think got stolen during a lan party) I just mounted the image.

Not that this really helps you with your dilemma, as you now need to mount the iso every time you boot your pc, but you can play if you have another disk in your drive for some reason.

Oh yeah, I also bought a new drive, so that problem is solved anyway.

hm. that's weird, hell Fallout 3 works without the CD/DVD, Painkiller, Guild Wars, The Witcher don't require the CD/DVD either, so weird

I was happy when I realized you didn't need the disk for fallout 3. After all, you DID need it for oblivion, and I had assumed the same would be true for a future game which basically used the exact same engine.

But it's available disc-free from Steam. :C

Which is another anti-piracy tool that requires you to use the program that the game has been installed on.

Most important thing: respect your customers and treat them well and they will respect you. People like to get revenge on entities that wronged them, and piracy is often turned to as retaliation for DRM etc. (see: Spore piracy).
I no longer buy the "piracy is mostly retaliation for DRM" excuse, because of what happened to both World Of God and Demigod.

I don't really see the point in complaining. I don't usually buy retail for the PC (I'm a Steam fan), but if I do, I'm perfectly willing to spend two seconds of my time inserting the disk.

Well, if you want to *****, maybe you should buy it off Steam. Seriously... I don't know many games that play without a disc in the tray. There's a few, but nothing big-budget or AAA titled.
Also, my vote is piracy reasons.

It's all a holdover from the days when people actually traded games to friends, so that only one person in a circle needed to buy it. Don't see that happen to much anymore, as serial numbers, multiplayer and DRM are becoming more prevalent.

Word of Caution if you do crack it. About 90% of cracks for new titles contain some sort of virus unless you're getting it from a reliable source or a private tracker. Scan the file before you run it. And seriously consider just getting it from Steam.

dL a crack, if anyone gives you trouble for it tell them to piss off since you own the game anyway.
You don't technically own your game, you're licensing it. They can still sue your ass for circumventing copy-write protection in any form.

Stop bitching, us 360 players have to use TWO discs and insert the second one when told by the game.

You people sure know how to make a big fuss over nothing.

First thing I do when I buy a game retail is to make a backup ISO onto my external hard drive and then get a No-CD crack. That way I never ever have to worry about my game disk getting scratched and it can simply sit on my shelf in its box looking pretty forever, while I install it from the backup in the future and play with the crack.

Illegal? Probably.
Do I care? No, because I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, and I don't give a shit about dumb laws.

Try registering the CD Key with Steam. It may add it to your games list and it would work the same way as a game you bought over the steam network. It might work. Worked for me with Prey.

The 360 version takes TWO discs?! Wow... big game.
