Well, if you take Mass Effect 2 first, it'll be cheaper. Then, when you'll be done with your 2-4 playthrough, Catherine'll be cheaper and you can buy it.

It's no problem, really.

Just out of curiousity, why did you not like Mass Effect? I'm not going to flame you. Just need to help with the conclusion game.
I played the original for about... 2 hours or so and got bored of it. I couldn't figure out a lot of what to do and I couldn't change weapons. Maybe that makes me an idiot but I read the damn manual about 4 times but still couldn't figure out what to do. It was nice looking but just boring to me.

Yeah, I know these are totally different games but it's really all that's out that I don't have that I want/haven't played.

I enjoy Japanese games a lot. JRPGs make up the majority of my game shelf.
But I enjoy lots of different games. Strategy, RTS, Shooters, Co-op, Sci-fi, Action/adventure and so on. There's really no genre I don't like. I'm just weary about Mass Effect 2 since I didn't really like the first one.
Just go with Catherine. If you like JRPGs like Persona then you will like Catherine.

If you didn't like ME1, then you won't like ME2. It's different but not enough to sway your decision.

Yeah. It's like asking "What should I eat? An apple or a plate of french fries?"
Seeing as I haven't played Catherine, I can't make a recommendation outside the fact you could probably find ME2 a lot cheaper than Catherine at this point. Also, if what turned you off ME1 was the combat and vehicle sections and stuff like that, then ME2 is a definite improvement on that. But if it was all the role-playing stuff, then it's still pretty similar.

I say catherine , because like you i disliked ME1 . Heres to hoping you have similar tastes to mine. But theres nothing quite like catherine around , but things like ME are a dime a dozen ( okay not really but it isn't all that original ).

If you didn't like the original, why consider the sequel? Mass Effect is mostly about the story. The cover shooting portions are well done, but they only complement what's already in motion. Ignoring the story the only thing I really like about the series is that if you're patient enough to do several runs you can have an all out biotic character who is able to wipe out mobs with telekinetic powers alone.

Catherine, I haven't played but I'd only play it for the story, not much of a puzzle fan. Are you?

I've played them both multiple times. Catherine has a better story, gameplay, and has more endings. I just found it to be a much better game.

Because I've heard ME2 is extremely different than the first. Most people I know who disliked the first loved the second, so that's why I ask.

And this post ends the thread. Good job, sir. You deserve a cookie for that answer ^_^

Glad I could help. :)
Allow me to elaborate because it is a relatively big financial commitment.

1)Gameplay- ME2 has fairly generic cover based shooting. It is solid, but nothing to write home about. I found the puzzles in Catherine to be much more unique and challenging (boss battles are amazing). Both games offer a set number of dialogue choices in conversations/texts that will affect a morality meter, so that is a wash.

2)Story- One area that ME2 fell flat on its face compared to ME1 was its story. It retcons some things like Cerberus suddenly being anti-hero good guys (they were terrorists who performed unspeakable experiments in ME1. You can destroy some of their bases.) Why do I have to work for them again? It has some plot holes (TIM makes some very stupid decisions risking your life for no good reason), and the story doesn't really advance all that much.

Catherine, on the other hand, offers a mature tale of a love triangle and the decisions that one man must make. It goes into left field with craziness toward the end(Some people hated that, some loved it).

3)Characters- ME2 wins this one. It is longer which gives you more time to know the characters. The loyalty missions around them are also very well done. Catherine does have some good characters, though. (Orlando being a personal favorite)

4) As much as it likes to brag about choice, ME2 only has two endings. Catherine has three distinct endings and flavors in between that brings the total to 8.

Those are my thoughts, anyway.

I think I let the image speak for myself, to be honest I would get Cathy first THEN wait for ME2.
Just follow RedEyesBlackGamer creed and you'll be fine.

Get Mass effect 2. its fun, its got great conversations, and its got an interesting story. though to be fair I haven't played Catherine, but ME2 is really great and it has a future installment that directly correlates to your actions in the sequel

Agreed with you there, Whiteblood.

I still think it's an unfair comparison: If, as Red Eyes says there are only two endings, there's still a LOT of things you can do in every play through to experience things differently: Who do you choose to take to each mission, the decisions you made in the previous game, the final outcome of most loyalty missions, who lives or dies in the suicide mission. They're too different to compare. I wouldn't say any of them are better than the other, save for personal tastes.

And well-- I've finished ME1 and 2 in pretty much every way possible. If NOW I had the means to play Catherine (no console) I'd be playing it too.

Both are good games. I like mass effect better, but if you didn't like the first, like everyone else said, don't bother with the second.
