I think I mined 2 planets in between each major and each loyalty mission (sometimes more if I was really close to affording an upgrade) and collected the rest of the minerals during actual missions.

I upgraded the ship with the cannon and shields, upgraded weapons plenty of times, and had all but 2 team members (Zaeed and Mordin) survive.

Why you were mining for hours on end is beyond me.
I'm struggling to understand your position as well. I played through almost the entire game before started mining for minerals. Even then I had to do it for a good while before I could afford most of the upgrades.
Well that'll be why you were mining for hours then.

I paced myself through the game, so it was never an issue.
I don't see why I should have to 'pace' myself. It's still rubbish.

Yes, it is - but in very short bursts its fine. You're told early on (or you figure it out early on) that you're going to need to scan to upgrade.

You're complaining it was boring, but you set yourself up for that. It was crap, but you didn't do yourself any favours by doing it the way you did.

Besides, it was easier than dropping down in the Mako, driving to 2 spots on the opposite side of each map and harvesting hardly anything.

I missed the Mako a lot. Scanning was meh, even in small doses.

The best part of scanning in ME2 in my opinion is that it inspired "Those Minerals" by Kabuto the Python:

I mined a couple of planets in between each major mission and

only Mordin and Zaeed died

What would make you think you need to mine so much?

EDIT: Its getting quite funny how much people are banging on about this - clearly this is a sign that it was really an amazing game for most, yet they're still whining about the tiniest element of gameplay.
Tiny element?

Its not tiny when you have to do a HUGE amount of it just to save your crewmates.

The total cost of a upgraded Shields, Armour and Weapons is 15,000 Platinum, 30,000 Palladium.

You get more than that with an imported level 60 Shepard last I checked.

You don't have to do any mining to save your crewmates.

Find my other post - I hardly did a lot of it and almost everyone survived.
