IMHO: ME2 is shit. the gameplay is boring, the story is bat fuck stupid and all the human characters crawled out of the uncanny valley. Do not waste your time with this piss poor sequel.
Hey. I like you. Let's hang out.

the planet mining is retardedly boring but aside from that it's definitely worth it- the characters are well developed (even the ones you'll end up hating) and the combat functions, but it's definitely not the main focus of the game. you can break it with a couple classes but pretty much any approach you take will be fun. i would recommend either messing around as an infiltrator sniper with cryo ammo or being a vanguard and spamming the combat lunge thingy, those are the two most fun classes in my opinion.

No. The characters are soulless rubber masks, the writing is mediocre to bad (yet still gets good reviews for some reason), and the gameplay is simple and repetitive.

So if you liked Dragon Age, you'll love it!
I kind of felt like that when I started out and was pretty disappointed with it compared to the first one. I wasn't really thrilled with the gameplay (and am still not, but I've grown to tolerate it), and collecting party members was kind of tedious. I made myself go back and play a bit more after taking a break for a week or two, though, and when I got to doing the loyalty missions instead of just acquiring yet another team member to dump in the cargo hold and forget about, I started enjoying it more. I think it would've benefited from having probably a third of the main cast ripped out and the ones who were left developed twice as much as they were, since there were just too many of them and not enough time to do anything with them, and not enough plot to go around, either, but I'm at least having enough fun that I'm planning on finishing the game now that I'm nearing the end, which I didn't expect would happen when I was slogging through the beginning of it.

DAO, on the other hand, I got bored of and quit maybe a quarter of the way through. Man, was that a tedious game. Heh.

I definitely agree with that. I just wish there was more of a main plot, instead of having almost the entire game be sidequests (not an exaggeration, for those who haven't played it). I didn't really care about the characters, because they just felt like a "here's something to distract you when you don't feel like playing the actual game" device which the game forces you to interact with. And also their faces are like G.I. Joe.

The main plot is horrible drivel and most of the human characters are a waste of space (Most characters brought over from ME1 are still cool, Jack's okay if kind of one-note, and I have a soft spot for Kasumi, though she's DLC). Most of the sideplots and non-human characters show some of BioWare's best writing though. Gameplay was really repetitive, but I found it fairly smooth and responsive.

It's a pretty fun story-driven shooter but not much of an RPG and don't except the plot to be original.

I'd recomend ME1 over ME2 although ME2 is not a bad game by any means but it' not an epic rpg any more. It's Gears of War with better story, a lot of yapping and some rpg bits. And of course then there is the mind numbingly boring probeing, like seriously didn't any one in the dev team go fuck this what gaming hell must look like.

I didn't like Dragon Age because of it's combat being too much like WoW, but I really liked Mass Effect 2

I recently discovered that my copy of Dragon Age: Origins, ultimate edition came with a free armor set for the game Mass Effect 2, and now since I've beaten DA:O I need a new game, so is ME2 worth it?
Yes. Yes. A thousand times yes.

Honestly, I liked Mass Effect 2 more than Dragon Age: Origins. And I loved Dragon Age. ^^

Plus, ME3 coming out in March. Further awesomness to ensue.

And if you can get a copy, ME1 is great too. I don't like the game itself as well, but the story is more plot driven (although not as character driven as ME2).

As pretty much everyone else has said. It's one of my favourite games of the last few years and personally I think it stacks up pretty well compared to other Bioware classics like Baldurs Gate (although it is a very different type of RPG).

Definitely recommend playing ME1 first though it gives you context, a pile of backstory and most of the really excellent background touches in ME2 make much more sense when you have played ME1 first.

P.S. Enkindle This!

Very well, and thank you people of the escapist, I'm gonna try and get ME1 and 2, once more all, thank you all.
Good decision. All together, when I got both games and eventually all the DLC for them around four months ago, it ended up costing me around 80 dollars. The two games without the DLC, came to 40 dollars all together on Amazon, of course with Amazon, that means free shipping.

The DLC for ME1, since you only have to get one of them since one is included with the platinum hits copy, is 6 to 8 dollars, I can't remember.

The DLC for ME2, comes to around 32 dollars. Also, if you have a few extra bucks, I also recommend getting the weapon pack that includes the Phalanx pistol. That thing is an accurate beast; it saved me many times.

Edit: Though I will say that that armor you got for ME2 when you got the DA:Ultimate Edition, it is really just for look. It really doesn't help all that much, so download it, put it on for a few laughs, and then put on the helpful pieces of armor that actually boost your stats.

Yeah it definitely worth a pick up especially since its cheap now 20 bucks for the 360 version and 30-40 for the ps3 version with all of the dlc, as most have said its a really good game, I'd read up on the firsts story if your on 360 ps3 has an interactive comic that gives you the jist of the story, ME 1 was a good game too but unless your really interested in it I don't think its really worth it to play it for the 40 hours it takes to get through the story if your playing it just to get to ME 2.

Mass Effect 2 is worth playing, even if you haven't played the first game. It's awesome. Go my child, go and fight like a Krogan and run like a Leopard!

Whichever DLC is set on a meteor, that one's pretty much a must-have. Not to spoil anything, but it's a good source of a couple of essential items that can't be found for love nor money in the main game, aside from being a really good quest in and of itself.

But yes -- the ME series is amazing. Play it. Assuming you don't mind a stereotypical (but very well executed) expansive-space-opera plot. Oh, and roll a female Shepard -- the female voice actor is much, much better than the male one.

absolutely. It's worth every penny, a prime example of how impressive games can be. You will not be disappointed
