I find it a very very bad idea. Since there can only be one Shepard the second player will just be a henchman that gets nothing as seen in all the single player games that have done this. Also they failed even more as a single player game also.
I still hope this is not true and even if it's true there is plenty of time to make them change their mind over an so obvious bad idea. Thing is making Mass Effect 3 the best game of the serie is pretty easy just combine the action/fighting/moving part from ME2 with the RPG elements(minus combat) from ME1. I wouldn't even mind the vehicle section beeing brought back since it was good enough in ME2 as long as it's flying/hovering vehicles.

Well, fuck. Guess I'm going to have to cancel my pre-order for this too.

Really wanted to finish the story, what a bummer. Too bad it's looking more like Gears of War than Mass Effect at this point.
I could understand this if the multiplayer portion was being released alongside the game(and you still had to pay for it), but this is optional content that comes out later on.
The fact is that they're using yet more time that they could be using on the actual story elements to add another aspect to the shooter part of the game. This is not why I started playing Mass Effect, and though I'm sure I would enjoy what story there is in ME3, I'm not going to buy it/rent it/pirate it/play it at all because I don't want to support Bioware until they stop trying to emphasize the action parts of their RPGs to the point of making the RP part suffer.

I think Bioware made it DLC so that they could appease EA's demands for multiplayer while not completely fucking up the core gameplay. That being said I'm not sure many ME fans are going to give multiplayer a go, which might help kill the notion that all games need multiplayer.

It's EA,what did you expect? And even if they're considering it,it should be Co-op not multiplayer.
but co-op is multiplayer... anyways, ive never played mass effect but sounds fairly sensible to me, dont people complain alot about awful ai in ME 1&2? i suppose actual people in your squad might be better strategicly... or worse now that i think about it
Co-op(Cooperative) is up to 4 players.

Multiplayer is up to 5+ people.

and if the DLC says "Multiplayer" its definitely not Co-op.

I am seeing a silver lining here. Since multiplayer will be separate and cost extra, hopefully next to nobody will buy it, and whoever made this shitty decision will see how bad an idea it was.

Sorry to sound like a Cynical bastard but the DLC will not be produced post Dev-time. It will be produced in dev time and released after it has been given a quick spit-shine. I Fully expect Mass Effect 3 to be an 8-10 hour game and i fully expect EA to be charging full price for it and £20 or so for the multiplayer.
This is also what im expecting, or maybe a 15hour game but exactly like ME2 save for a couple of differences

They won't be working on the multiplayer until later on, or they'd just add it to the disk if it already was. By the time multiplayer actually starts going into full swing a majority of the people working on it will have already done what they've meant to do with the game. This is how a majority of DLC works. It would hardly take from the RPG elements you speak of. However, given how Dragon Age 2 was, I'd simply expect the game to be more action than RPG even if they didn't have the multiplayer being added once the game is out.

It's Damn EA's fault. Throwing Multiplayer on everything that needs it.

I'm going to guess it's something Horde-ish though.

You're going to cancel a pre-order based on the fact that optional DLC exists that you're not interested in? That's kind of like saying you don't want a burger because the option to pay extra for cheese is there, and you don't like cheese. If you want to boycott the idea of post-release premium content, don't buy that. But don't prevent yourself from enjoying a game you've otherwise been looking forward to.

If they're gonna try ME multiplayer, this seems a good a way as any. Don't force those who don't care to take part, and don't waste single player development time trying to shove it on to the disk. Spend a few months on it to try for a polished product, keep working on it post-release of the actual game, show a few demos, and then see if anyone wants to try it

Besides, until it's confirmed publically by EA and/or Bioware, it may still be bullshit. Or, by mentioning it online, we may be giving them ideas.

I think EA is upset that Activision stole the title of Biggest Dicks in the Industry from them and have been working hard to take back. They're doing an amazing job. Activision is currently trying to fight back with Diablo 3, but man, they don't seem to have a chance.

You know what?

If this is their project $10 part of the game, I guess I'm ok with that. Better they make it this way rather than cutting out people who bought it second hand.

The game has had a three year dev cycle. I highly, highly doubt we're only looking at an 8-15 hour game here.

I hope you're right about that, but I'm still probably not going to get it. I'm not going to complain about other people buying it, I'm just not going to get it for the same reason that I'm not buying Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3; because I no longer like the company it's being made by and I'd think it hypocritical to claim that I don't like Bioware (Anymore) and then go right ahead and buy their games anyway.

And about the whole "They're making the game and then working on MP post-release" thing, I don't see how it makes sense to do something as demanding as multiplayer and make it in a month.

Haha, that's hilarious. Well, hopefully this means the multiplayer is an afterthought, not a concern when balancing the single player.

Stupid EA. Stop making Mass Effect more mainstream.

There are games that should be more mainstream, and there should be games that fit a niche for specific types of people who play those types of games.
