Well, fuck. Guess I'm going to have to cancel my pre-order for this too.

Really wanted to finish the story, what a bummer. Too bad it's looking more like Gears of War than Mass Effect at this point.
Dude its probably going to be free. What a ludicrous and extreme response to something we know very little about. You have made me laugh good sir.

If its free. Yes. If not. Im not touching that shit.

What a bunch of absolute garbage. I hope the Jimquisition gets ahold of this. Anyways, I am most certainly buying Mass 3, but (and I cant believe I am going to say this) I think I need to avoid buying this DLC to prove a point. I hope ALOT of people feel the same way, and follow suit.

Mass Effect is mainly a single player game, and the idea of introducing a multiplayer component as DLC makes sense. It's an experience that is fundamentally different from the rest of the game. So you pay a smaller additional fee for a very different play experience. Sounds like a cut and dried, obvious example of how one SHOULD do DLC. I'm not sure if this is a great business decision: Multiplayer included would be an excellent way to boost sales, and that opens up the option for additional sales from map packs down the road, not to mention possible sales to people who are just getting into the series now (And possibly inspiring them to get sucked into the single player, encouraging them to go and buy 2 more games to round out the story). But yes, I think that charging money for what is functionally a separate game makes sense.

Don't want the multiplayer? Don't buy it. Do want the multiplayer? A company just decided to charge you money for a product that they created that you want and are willing to pay for. That's pretty much the absolute basics of an economy.

From threads that bioware are locking as they pop up

So I know this is a sore subject with most people, and I am tired of hearing rumors about it too, but I just had a games conference for my work where publishers come in and talk about upcoming games and we get to see/play demos. In the presentation for EA they brought up Mass Effect 3 and pointed out the best points about the game and the Collectors Edition.

In these bullet points, and stated by the EA representitive presenting the game, there would be a multiplayer mode available as DLC around a month after the game is shipped. No other information was given, maybe it's something they're announcing at Gamescom? (some of what we got to see were said to be "exclusives" as they were not due to be shown until gamescom.)
So how do you feel that not only are they using dev time to make a multiplayer mode for a game that doesnt need it but are also charging you extra for it?
Well. Let's put aside from the fact that ME doesnt really need a Multiplayer. Seriously its space opera story. For one person. Stop trying to f it up EA.

DLC Multiplayer modes? Thats not exactly unheard of.

Sorry for the double post

The point isn't that we are being forced to play it or pay for it, the REAL problem is that Bioware is diverting time and resources from making the main campaign to be perfect for a series finally, and sending them to make a multiplayer mode that is most likely not going to go well since it is first for the series.
I don't know, that seems like a rocky path to traverse. We don't know that they're pulling resources from the main game to make this multiplayer function, given the scale and money already involved in this game it seems to me that the more likely scenario is that they are putting additional people to work on this aspect of the project; a different team to manage the co-op functions and integrate that in with the main teams working on the game.

And honestly, these guys are not really known for fucking up. We might not like some of the stuff they do, but they do good stuff.
Sure, it could be done without resources being diverted, either by bringing in a new team or taking a team that is done with whatever they were tasked to do and having them start on multiplayer, but that is a concern that most people are afraid of. That and the fact that disc space that could be used for singleplayer is being devoted to a (possibly shitty) multiplayer mode. Fortunately that fear is averted since it is going to DLC (apparently).

I really, really doubt it's that long. Source?
It might not be 6 months for every game, it may be closer to say, 4 months, but there is a good bit of time between when a game is finished being made and when the game hits the shelves. And that time is usually used for something productive, such as developing DLC or beginning work on a sequel or a new game all together.

Personally i find multiplayer to be a blight to single player gaming so i couldnt really give a rats ass about Multiplayer DLC. It can be free, it can be paid, i wont be downloading or using it.

In fact the way ME3 is looking far more like an FPS with 'rpg elements' than an RPG i might not even bother getting it at all.

It's EA, the leading team of bullshit money making inventions, the only thing that surprises me they went so long without this.

It's EA,what did you expect? And even if they're considering it,it should be Co-op not multiplayer.
I thought it was co-op... the two terms aren't mutually exclusive.

I'm still discovering that DLC is planned before games are released. THAT ISN'T HOW IT SHOULD WORK. Gah...
Roughly six months before a game comes out it is already finished completely.
I think a lot of people have a pretty hard time believing that.

Actually, I think that's a pretty good idea.

I don't particularly want to play multiplayer ME3, so I just don't buy that DLC.

Works for me.

And now I shall sit back and enjoy a tall glass of the impotent tears that fill this thread.
Pretty much this. Though, at this point, pretty much any BioWare related topic is pure popcorn.

inb4 the single player suffers because they waste time adding multi player.

Not sure why everyone is acting so offended by this. I'm annoyed that the game will have multi player, but at least I don't have to bother with it. I don't need nor want it taking up the disc space which could be used for the single player.

The fact is that they're using yet more time that they could be using on the actual story elements to add another aspect to the shooter part of the game.
They've had 8 years to get the story down. Watch interviews with the writers. They've had the end planned for a while. And Casey Hudson at Comic Con said don't worry about the story, when someone asked about multiplayer. He said something along the lines that Mass Effect is still a game for the single player and their experience. The only thing that is being slapped together is the multiplayer. So..well, maybe I'm just an optimist.

They want to make the game seem as far from ME1 as possible?

I am trying to look for a reason to hate this because, well....EA. But I don't really feel it.

EA does a lot of incredible stupid things lately. Project 10 dollar is handled poorly, no one is excited for Origin etc.
But a large portion of the ME fanbase doesn't want multiplayer in ME, especially at the risk of it ruining the singleplayer experience. Now, people who don't want multiplayer don't have too, meaning I can fight the reapers in peace.

.....unless there is some really good story connected to the multiplayer, tied in with the singleplayer in which case CURSE YOU EA.

TL;DR: I can actually kinda think this is a good move.
