I'm confused. The title makes it sound like you find Mass Effect (the first one) boring, but your post says the second one's boring. Both that their slogging parts for me, but I'm going to say Mass Effect 2 is the one you're talking about.
Try playing not only as a different class, but a different gender. I always play as a female in Mass Effect because the male voice actor sounds like he's reading a script and then reading the emotional prompts too. However, after hearing that Tali was a romance option, I caved and played as a male. Different things happen, enough so that it kept the game interesting and "new".
I do agree though that this game is short and at parts boring. Most of it is spent getting team members and then getting their loyalty, with very little story developement. Think about it. There are only five missions related to the story (Freedom's Progress, the colony, the Collector ship, Reaper ship, endgame). Hopefully this means ME3 will be pure plot, since you have a freakin' army now.
On a side note, does anyone know why Wilson (the guy at the start) did what he did? I've played the game 3 times and still have figured out why.
