Of course not. However, Mass Effect's universe is practically begging for an MMO. There are a ridiculous number of periods in the timeline to set them in (the first Contact War, for example), the lore is already established, and besides, The Old Republic is probably going to bomb anyways.
So, the Star Wars Universe was not begging for an MMO? One if not the most popular science fiction franchises ever? One of the most established universes ever is not begging for an MMO? Star Wars is better for one. It already has a much larger universe and history. More places to explore, travel to, more alien species, etc. etc.

The same reason that Warhammer is failing, Aion failed, and most MMOs fail; it's being hyped far too much. I don't know if you've played any MMOs just after launch, but they ALWAYS suck. Like, hardcore. Hundreds upon thousands, maybe even a million people will install this game and log on. And the server stress will be fuckin' biblical. There will be crashes galore, bugs, stuck characters, a virtual Armageddon of PC rage. And people will leave.
And besides, Star Wars just doesn't lend itself to an MMO, because people mostly want one thing: To play a Jedi. And to make Jedi NOT completely overpowered, you have to basically destroy canon. And that is NOT cool, Boo Boo.
It sounds like you believe that BioWare would not thoroughly check for bugs and glitches before releasing the game. Which is just plain ignorant. That said, all games have bugs and glitches when released, it just depends how noticable they are. Also, any game no matter the genre, can "suck" when it comes out if people get there hopes up too high and have unreasonable expectations.
Judging from those last sentences you obviously haven't heard much about the combat and the PvP battle zones. http://e3.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/705576/E3-2010-Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic-Exclusive-Three-Part-Demo.html Watch the combat demo video, second from the top. Its at the very beginning. Lastly, this isn't going to be your typical MMO, its fully voiced, it can be played like a single player RPG and it is story driven.
I've seen all this. It does not impress me. All companies thoroughly check for bugs on an MMO's release, but how do you simulate
millions of people stressing the servers? How do you check every square inch of a game that spans thousands of virtual kilometers? The simple fact is, you can't. You do your best, open it to release, and hope that the shit doesn't hit the fan. Have you ever played an MMO shortly after launch? I'm assuming not. OTherwise you'd know what I'm talking about.
As for your comment about a Star Wars MMO
needing to be done... They already had one. Star Wars Galaxies, by Sony Online Entertainment. And it was beautiful. At least, before they made Jedi an initial option for a class. Then it all fell apart.
Regardless of what Bioware has said about PvP, there is NO way that you can make Jedi balanced and still have it fit canon. What happens when a Jedi hits someone with a lightsaber? They die. That's all there is to it. They're dead, or they're dismembered. That's my major problem with EVERY Star Wars RPG: You can't claim "kinetic shields" or anything like that, because
there are no personal shield barriers in Star Wars. The only way a Smuggler, for example, could beat a Jedi is a sneak attack. And that won't happen all the time.
I despise MMOs that disregard canon for 'the sake of the game.' Especially when the game claims to be as 'cinematic' and 'story-driven' as Bioware's SW:TOR. As for your comment that this won't be like a typical MMO, I have to "LoL" at that. Every MMO says that. Warhammer said it. Hyborean Adventures (Or whatever the Conan one was called) said it. Tabula Rasa said it. What's the common line between those three? They all failed. The only MMO that succeeded in bringing large innovation to the table was EVE Online, a game that is widely despised by the gaming community. Why, I'll never know, but there it is.
How is SW going to be different? Voicing? Whoop-dee. Story? If I want a story, I'll play a single-player RPG. A story-driven MMO is impractical for the sole reason that MMOs do not lend themselves to a story-driven context. It doesn't make sense. Every time you do a "story mission" or talk to a voiced character, it'll be blatantly obvious that you're not important, because thousands have already helped him destroy that Sith vessel or whatever as soon as you step into a town and see "LF2M JABBA"
I don't quite know why I'm arguing this in the first place. You'll not change your mind, and neither will I. Mass Effect should have an MMO before Star Wars gets ANOTHER one, likely one that will fall apart, just like SWG did.
