Not to sound a bit pessimistic, but Mass Effect 2 Pro tip: Just decide from the get go whether you want to be Paragon or Renegade and stick with it every single time, with few possible exceptions such as to gain the loyalty from a party member.
If you fail to be consistent the game penalizes you by locking you out from certain dialogue options just cause you weren't 'good' or 'bad' enough.
Never give anything to Cerberus cause they're pricks. Forgot about any foreshadowed 'consequences' of releasing anyone who is on the ship cause the reason they're on the ship is to mindlessly help you go 'pew pew' all across the galaxy.
...yes it was. Just not the PS3. 360 has it. I know because I beat it about 12 times on 360

Well luck ran short for me unfortunately. The PC version of Mass Effect 1 I have simply refuses to work. I don't want to go into details. Still, I have the second one for PS3. I might as well try to enjoy that one.
Don't make Shepard look hilarious. You will, if you have any appreciation for video game stories, get into it. A goofy looking Shepard will become a very old joke long before you've stopped caring about the plot.
Vanguard is freaking awesome. Unless that's not your style, definitely do it. It's great.
Also, play the first one first if you haven't. It's worth it; this is a series that builds on your choices with each installment. Choices you make in each one will affect how the next turns out. Especially with the third one coming out soon, you'll want to see how your personal story turns out. I cannot stress highly enough that you should play the first one before the second.
When you fully upgrade your 'class' talent, you can choose one or two options. Choose the one that gives you 100% Paragon/Renegade, because the other one caps you at 70% and some options are unavailable. A cheap move, in my opinion.
No. The fish are just pets you can pick up at various shops. Something to look at in your quarters. If you don't feed them between EVERY FUCKING MISSION they'll go belly-up. And you'll cry and it'll be just terrible.
But I'd recommend getting them for the simple fact that having an empty tank of water in your room is depressing.
Not even close to Infamous' karma system. Actually, it's not even a karma system really. Like Yahtzee said, it's pretty much picking whether you want to be Dirty Harry or Captain Picard.
You earn Paragon and Renegade points on two separate scales,so if you do a Renegade interrupt (EX: Punching the reporter in the face), it won't affect your Paragon score whatsoever. Mostly so you can do a mixed karma thing.
The only problem is that you either have to go full Paragon or full Renegade, otherwise PEOPLE WILL DIE. I can not stress that enough. Choose whether or not you wanna be a badass or a beacon of hope beforehand. There are points in the game where you will have to settle disputes between crew members. The normal dialogue options will not cut it.

Actually, that's not true. They're not 70% and 100% caps, they're +70% and +100%, meaning it takes 70% or 100% of your paragon/renegade score and adds it back to your paragon/renegade score, leaving you with either 1.7 times or 2 times your un-augmented paragon/renegade score. So, it's easier to get all the paragon/renegade dialogue options if you take the +100% class mastery, but you don't have to take it. Both my infiltrators took the Assassin mastery (the +70% one) because of the superior boost to weapon damage and sniper rifle time-dilation, and I never came across a point where I couldn't access a paragon/renegade option along my current alignment path.
edit: Also, all the people saying you have to choose paragon or renegade and stick to it are a little off. True, it's best to stick to one, but that doesn't mean you can't occasionally dabble in the other. None of my femsheps have let the Batarian mercenary recruiter inside Afterlife get away with his insults, and none of my Shepards period have let Uvenk run his mouth on Tuchanka.
edit 2: Also also, while recommended, you don't have to get all your team mates loyal to you before the Reaper IFF mission, or get all of the ship upgrades, or do any of it at all.
Reasons why you might want to do all that stuff, and why you'd want to do it before doing the Reaper IFF mission (as the little button says, spoilers):
If you don't upgrade the Normandy's armor, shields, or weapons, then depending on which one(s) you didn't upgrade specific companions will die during the final mission.
During the final mission you'll be required to assign your companions to specific tasks. If you assign someone not loyal to you to one of those tasks, or someone not suited to the task, then they will either get themselves or another one of your companions killed. And if a companion isn't loyal to you then they probably won't survive the final mission period, so if you find that you really dislike one of your companions just don't get them loyal to you.
The reason you have to do this stuff before the Reaper IFF mission specifically is that once you finish the Reaper IFF, a timer starts. You can complete 2 more missions, the first time you attempt to land after that all hell breaks loose. You can keep doing side quests or loyalty missions after that if you want, but if you do then your crew (not your companions your crew, all the people in the background keeping the Normandy flying) dies.
Be a Renegade. The Mass Effect series, or douche-bag simulators as I like to call them, are the only games where you (Commander Shepard) can be a total ass and get away with it.
I suggest playing the first Mass Effect game first, though. Or at least buying the 15 minute interactive DLC for Mass Effect 2 that allows you to make the key decisions in the first game so the galaxy doesn't think humans are complete assholes. But if not, that's cool. The other races may hate you, but that's only because they're jealous.
- I would play ME1 first and then use the character import to continue ME2 with my ME1 character
- In my opinion Soldier is the most boring class ingame, Vanguard is definetly a WIN and Infiltratorr #2
- Play on hardest difficulty possible, it brings more of the "RPG feeling" into gameplay and even on insanity the game is pretty easy
- if you made your character using the customization tool, then take time and effort to make a face you want to watch for next best 40hours youve spent on game
- Play the way YOU want and dont go to internet asking how to play and dont under any circumstances get exposed to spoilers
Someone else probably said this, but TRY to find the first one. There are big decisions made in the first one that affect the story of the second one. Plus, most of the story and characters will not make sense without the first. Buy it, borrow it, or steal it, I don't care, but play the first one.
Tips? Well, seriously just get the first one. I don't care if you can't... FIND A WAY!! lol, but seriously I found the first one to be way better than the second. And you probably won't enjoy the second nearly as much without having beaten the first.
Also, complete EVERYTHING. Leave no side-quest unfinished, leave no upgrade undone, and make sure you're finished it all before the "Reaper IFF" mission.
Well luck ran short for me unfortunately. The PC version of Mass Effect 1 I have simply refuses to work. I don't want to go into details. Still, I have the second one for PS3. I might as well try to enjoy that one.
If you've got a PC that can run it, play it on that. Also, play Mass Effect 1 first (they both came out on PC, both are generally less expensive for PC, and you can map controls any way you like on PC... including to a PS3 controller, if that's your thing). These are very story-driven games, and the second one picks up as an actual sequel, original story (mostly) intact.
