I thought they floated by using mass effect fields to reduce themselves to weightlessness? It is anyone's guess where they are keeping the devices powering these fields.

As for everyone speaking English? They don't. Hanara actually talk in Bio luminescence (flashing lights) its the machine on Shepard's suit/in Shepard's ear or brain that is translating it. You can see this with Batarians; they are isolated from the galaxy at large and although they take pains to keep the galaxy up to speed with their language the occasional word remains untranslated when you are fighting them.

Why does virtually everyone in the universe speak English?
Mass effect fields! XD

I think it's just a fancy phrase for "willing suspension of disbelief."
It's explained in BDtS, all races use translators.
"Most individuals know only their mother tongue, and rely on machine translation. Modern portable computers allow anyone with a few hundred credits of equipment to enjoy seamless real-time translation of alien languages, courtesy of handheld PDAs, computers in clothing or jewelry, or sub-dermal implants."

Also, there is intergalactic "trade language" that most people in the galaxy know.
I figured as much, though I must say the Star Wars explanation (universal language) seems more convinging than the Star Trek explanation (universal translators).

Both of which have little to do with why the Hanar float, so I'm going to shut up now.

Well damn...and here i though they were just using their tentacles...
Seriously, i just thought they had those weird-looking long legs or something, never really looked closely if they seemed to hover or stand on them.
Well, the more i know, the better.

When science cannot explain it, just go with magic. I know it's science fiction and not fantasy, but just go with it. There be magic up in those bitches.
