Mass Effect Question

Well since I lost all of my game saves on my PC (despite me telling the back up to back up "My Documents") I've started with Mass Effect and go on to 2 again. But I made a couple of mistake my first run and wish to correct this time.

-How do you save the council? Last time I had them die, what choice do I choose?

Saving the council is very worth it, and all you do is send in the fleet when Joker contacts you.
