I remember a thread like this back when Mass Effect 2 came out.

Would it have ME elements like dialogue options and deciding where to go next? Or just ME sprites on SC2?

IF it happened, hopefully they would put the ME sprites in a good RTS like Command And Conquer.

i think it would be like eras so the human vs turian war then geth then reapers vs everone and beyond as the universe is so rich you could do anything

Homeworld gameplay style? Or more traditional RTS gameplay?

I'd personally hope for a new homeworld - HW2 is getting old, and Nexus: TJI wasn't the right sort of thing. Never got Sins cos it didn't seem to have a single player worth a damn, but Mass Effect developed with the budget of Starcraft could make a very compelling RTS.

Oooh, maybe make it a grander scale RTS, with a galactic view; playing a young race, establishing colonies, first contact with the various species and factions, uncovering technology - that would make a beautifully free-for single player campaign, almost total war style but with a bit of civilisation thrown in.

You could bracket the whole thing with the greater reaper plot (or whatever it develops into in ME2), playing a secondary part of the Mass Effect story as led by key plot missions and tit bits uncovered through your explorations. Or perhaps it's before the time of the Reapers, and maybe even humanity - your race is vying for Council position, or maybe in conflict with it.

The universe is large, and the timeline long. there's infinite potential in there

So basically you want Mass Effect to take the same route as Halo, no thanks, they are screwed up Mass Effect 2.

Nope, mainly because Mass Effect has very few places were it would work outside of space. The whole point of Mass Effect is to stop the Reapers, who are a space faring race. Heck, they're just giant spaceships. You could have a couple of ground battles against the Geth, but I'm sure they wouldn't be able to go to far with the idea and not tread into Space and I'm not sure how they would be able to do that in an RTS.
