Well if Activision gets it's claws on the franchise we will be seeing a new game every half a year. I think that is one of the worst things.

the rpg elements and narritive could be removed leaving us with a generic shooter
or they could make it like the dreaded blue hedgehog that we're all sick of at this point

Apparently nobody came up with the simplest, yet single worst thing that could happen to a franchise: a movie directed by Michael Bay.

And while they are at it, the script should be written by Stephanie Meyer.

I have seen only a little from Mass Effect (still want to get around to play it), but as it is, the Bay treatment would be the worst.

Since linear corridor shooter is already taken, since the game was at that point in ME2, Id probably just have to say "linear corridor shooter with added emphasis on competitive multiplayer".

Failing that Id probably have to say anything that shifts it even closer to action/adventure territory by removing even more player control over "role playing". Its already pretty much at the "select the role the computer will play out for you" stage as it is.

RTS....

Thread over.
Really? I think an RTS could work. Controlling fleets of ships against Collector ships and Reapers in space would be pretty cool.

OT: Mass Effect 3: Cooking Mama
Cooking SHEPARD!

What about that?

I think people have forgotten the obvious category of 'rape simulation game'. Then again, if they were still mad at Fox for that whole scandal when ME 1 was released, that would be the most shockingly direct way to exact their revenge. And also to be sued by everyone.

Mass Effect 2. Oh, wait.

In that case, a traditional JRPG--that would effectively gut the core of the series.

A shooter. No wait. That's happened. But...there are worse things, actually.

It could be like Mr. Driller, but for mineral hunting.

No wait. That'd be fucking amazing. Mineral hunting turning into Mr. Driller.

I'd buy that.

But the worst it could do is become a sports game, really. Because the Mass Effect universe doesn't seem to have any sports besides BLOODSPORT.
A sports game crossed with a Visual Novel.

To everyone responding with a joke about ME2 - you're not clever.

Also, I'd say that the worst thing that could happen to it is too much focus on the gameplay.

I don't play ME games for the gameplay. And probably not that many people do.
Erm...

I think we're going to have to define what you count as gameplay, and what, exactly, you think people play the game for. And if it's for story, then that is part of the gameplay essentially.

*fixed*

Not to say that Bay is much better, but we're talking about the uncroiwned king of bad video game to film adaptions here. Man must have his due

Gameplay - all of the 3rd person shooter aspects of Mass Effect.

Story - dialogue, some of the few cutscenes, choice-making, etc.

I guess you could count the story as gameplay - it's adaptive and interactive and stuff, but the core gameplay of ME is the TPS - a not very good TPS.
