To be slightly more serious, it does kinda piss me off that games like Mass Effect, and hell, sci-fi in general, have all of their alien races able to easily communicate with one another. What are the odds that all these different species developed articulate vocal chords or analogous sound making organs? I mean, leave alone the whole "they're all humanoid mouth-breathing eye-seeing things with about the same height.
I just wanna see some REAL aliens in sci-fi. And I know, they do show up sometimes, like even in Mass Effect how there are some really weird ones that are obviously intelligent but totally alien, but they don't play big roles. The crazy-wide biological spectrum of possible alien life is totally underutilized in my opinion. I feel like the mainstream sci-fi blockbuster titles could really do with some basic xenological theory. (Xenology: the study of possible alien life-forms)
Okay, enough rant. Mass Effect is actually pretty fuggen awesome when it comes to thinking up cool scientific reasons behind their fantasy (I mean, planets that are uninhabitable because of spores? GENIUS), and the stories are pretty great and I'm small minded to be so scientific about fiction (even though I like to be) and I plan on playing the hell out of this game franchise.
I just hope that they do more with the Protheans. Total rip off of Contact (the abandoned interstellar hub that a bunch of species stubled across and made their own? Yeah, thank Carl Sagan) but awesome to play with. Long live Mass Effect!
