Same way Halo is considered a trilogy. The games will be set in the same universe, but they won't follow the same storyline that the original three games did.
But their still Mass Effect games,

BUNGIE YOU LIED TO ME!

Okay, so you are going to play as a creature that happened to evolve to see in polarized light, meaning you see things differently at different times, like bees! And they communicate by flashing luminescant parts of their bodies at each other in IR or radio or something and no one can figure out how the hell they talk, but you can't figure out how the other sapient creatures talk either cause nothing on your world evolved anything as strange as vocal chords.

Anyway, so the point is that as you adventure around with your mates trying to figure out how all these technologically advanced civilizations talk to each other, you come across this robot dude who figures it out and he's all like, "I bet I can dig up more clams than you can, buddy!" and you gotta be all like, "nuh uh!" and then you gotta race down to the space beach (like in Contact) with your buckets and your shovels, and the object of the game is to find parking.

To be slightly more serious, it does kinda piss me off that games like Mass Effect, and hell, sci-fi in general, have all of their alien races able to easily communicate with one another. What are the odds that all these different species developed articulate vocal chords or analogous sound making organs? I mean, leave alone the whole "they're all humanoid mouth-breathing eye-seeing things with about the same height.

I just wanna see some REAL aliens in sci-fi. And I know, they do show up sometimes, like even in Mass Effect how there are some really weird ones that are obviously intelligent but totally alien, but they don't play big roles. The crazy-wide biological spectrum of possible alien life is totally underutilized in my opinion. I feel like the mainstream sci-fi blockbuster titles could really do with some basic xenological theory. (Xenology: the study of possible alien life-forms)

Okay, enough rant. Mass Effect is actually pretty fuggen awesome when it comes to thinking up cool scientific reasons behind their fantasy (I mean, planets that are uninhabitable because of spores? GENIUS), and the stories are pretty great and I'm small minded to be so scientific about fiction (even though I like to be) and I plan on playing the hell out of this game franchise.

I just hope that they do more with the Protheans. Total rip off of Contact (the abandoned interstellar hub that a bunch of species stubled across and made their own? Yeah, thank Carl Sagan) but awesome to play with. Long live Mass Effect!

Yay!

Seriously, this is good. The Mass Effect universe is one of the best sci-fi settings I've encountered. It should be expanded upon.

Oh, I would so love to play as the Elcor. The dialogue options would be hilarious when communication with another one.

Good option: Move slightly to the left, shake right back leg.
Neutral option: Crouch a tad.
Bad option: Shake left... paw?
Have you seen the advertisement on the citadel for an all Elcor casted version of Hamlet?
Elcor dramatic theatre ftw!

Oh, and I am predictably predicting the "Mass Effect Wars: The Inevitable RTS"

Good for them. Just because this trilogy, and yes this is still a trilogy. The story of the Reapers in a trilogy. Even though it may come to an end we are talking about a GALAXY in space. Not the Universe, a GALAXY. Who knows what will happen if they expand outside of the given story. Who knows what else is out there in the Universe. The possibilities are endless and I for one applaud Bioware and having a clear view of their future objectives. At least we know this series isn't dead after the Trilogy, unlike Halo which I have been expecting to die for a good few years now.

Mass Effect is one of the few titles that I would like to see more sequels of than they originally said they would make.

The idea of a prequel is interesting, but from what I've seen Protheans are the only ones to be mentioned. The problem with doing that is that you already know what is going to happen and leaves very little room for change given what has been set in stone.

I personally would like to be something on the side of the Reapers. Different viewpoints ftw.

What? A trilogy is the same story told in three parts. It doesn't stop being a trilogy just because more stories are told in the same universe.

I actually don't see a problem with games where you know what's going to happen, god knows there have been loads of those anyway. Like any lord of the rings game that deals with the same story as the books, or any game made to cash in on a movie, or games made over comic books. People replay games where they know the story too. If the story is told well, it doesn't matter that we know the ending, and I would personally love to get some more info on the Protheans and the Reapers, which we would get in a Prothean-reaper game.

What's this? EA says they plan to keep milking their acquired intellectual property if it keeps selling?
I am shocked beyond surprise

...and mildly sarcastic I suppose.

Maybe a fucking awesome prequel where you get to be the Protheans and watch the Reapers butcher the entirety of your species, that would be kick ass. Or maybe something about the discovery and loss of the Leviathan of Dis! Or maybe something about the creation of the "great rift valley" on Klendagon which is really the result of a "glancing blow" by a mass accelerator round of unimaginable destructive power?!?!?! So many options............this is a great universe.
Turns out they find the weapon & it's target. Target was a Reaper which was killed & left adrift in the Hawking Eta cluster & is also where you pick up the Mega badass Legion

I have one request if they're going to go beyond the trilogy and that is for Bioware to give us the ability to play as an alien race. First Hanar spectre anyone?
