And you cant catch a wild Arceus, its a event only pokemon.
Yeah... So when you get the event, head up the stairs and battle Arceus, you use the master ball rather than struggling to catch him with ultra balls or whatever alternative.
....You get him from a guy at a Pokemart. Already captured and level 100. You didn't play 4th Gene did you?
Actually I did, I also possess an event Arceus that was obtained via download.
However the original method to obtain Arceus (regardless of whether its been officially released or not) is, as has been said, to obtain the azure flute allowing access to the area in which Arceus resides.

Its the same with all the event legendaries.
Darkrai - Get membership pass, sleep in motel, find diary with Darkrai's location, sail there and battle.
Shaymin - Get Oaks letter, find a path that has been extended, follow path to Shaymin and battle.

Now I have gotten both Darkrai and Arceus (I missed out on Shaymin) direct from download events, but that doesn't change the fact that they are in the game waiting to be caught the way they were sposed to be.

In fact it kinda pisses me off that we just get gifted the Pokemon when I would have liked the opportunity to go to these secret areas and earn them.

Actually I agree, I think it would have been better to catch Arceus. But the fact that you had him listed as one you caught- when the Hall of Origin hasn't been released confused me. (I checked on Bulpedia after Mater mentioned it was never officially released.) So I only have a non-hacked Arceus, which is not caught, just given to the player at level 100.

Would I have liked to catch him in a battle? Yes, yes I would have.

Gen 1 (Red/Yellow): Articuno - He was my favorite legendary bird, and I wanted him instantly. I can catch Mewtwo with Ultra balls, and have become pretty good at it, so no biggie.

Gen 2(Silver/Crystal): Ho-oh on Silver, and Suicune on Crystal - Ho-oh was a massive pain, so I just threw it to be done. The bastard knew recover, and I was tired of battling. Suicune had a big story in Crystal, and is my favorite legendary dog, so yeah.

Gen 3(Sapphire): Kyogre - I just wanted to get in, get out, and move on. It was a long day of playing.

Gen 4(Soulsilver): Raikou - I needed a good electric pokemon for the Elite 4. I got Lugia earlier with a few Heavy Balls, so it was free and just used it on Raikou. Glad I did, because I'm hunting after Entei right now, and he's a ***** to catch. I also have to get Latios. May as well take one out easy.

Wasn't me listing it, it was the OP. Easy mistake to make though when I play devils advocate as I did.

All you people actually get shinies? Wow. I've only seen a shiny Tangela,Tentacool, and Gyrados.
Anyway, I always use mine on MewTwo or one of the Regi pokemon. Usually steel.

A little off topic, but other people were talking about earning legendaries, I hate that Nintendo only gives really rare pokemon out at events. I am not in a position to go there and get one and I think it sucks that you can't get them just by playing the game.

OT

G 1 Mewtwo
G 2 Ho Oh
G 3 Rayquaza
G 4 Ho Oh (HG) I don't put up with unruly birds.

Heart Gold/Soul Silver are reboots of Gen 2. Generation 4 is Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum

You are correct! You are not the OP. My mistake.

Not sure if it would help to know, but some of the WonderCards for download events are tradeable. Or rather you send them to a friend as a gift through the Wi-Fi. So if you can find someone online nice enough to send you the Wonder card for the event, you could get a legendary or two that you missed. I don't remember which cards are tradeable, but Bulpedia should have them listed.

I also distinctly remember battling a level 80 Arceus. A dude in the PokeMart gave me an Azure Flute, which, when played at Spear Pillar, did a staircase summoning thing and then there was catching.
What event did you get? Because for everyone I know, the even was you just went to a pokecenter and he gave you the Arceus. No battle involved. Perhaps it's different by country? Where are you because I'm in America.
Mine was the flute, and i got the diamond event shaymen, and sent it over, but platnium wouldnt give me the freaking flower to change the form. It sucks so much.

Bulbapedia categorizes them as Gen4 games, so I will as well.

Gen. 3: Lati@s(Sped things up when I caught the wandering legendary of each area).
Gen 4: Giratina(Wasn't sure if I'd have another chance to catch it and spazzed out, wasting my master ball.

Didn't play the others.

Holy friggin' crap, the legendary birds are what got me to give up on catching everything in the original Blue. I think I managed to get one or two of them, but it may even have been trying and repeatedly failing to capture Articuno that made me get fed up with the game. I beat it and got my Mewtwo and all that, but the rest of those bastards were too much work. Makes me wish I'd been playing it in an emulator with save states instead of on my old GBC.

As far as the newer games, I haven't played any of them far enough in to ever have to make that decision. I keep wanting to like them, but they all seem to manage to do something to annoy me.
