I'll try to pick out a few from different genres:

Thrash Metal - Never made it into the big 4, but still legendary thrashers in their hayday

Death Metal - Yeah, yeah, colour me fucking predictable but how can you not love this classic:

Melodic Death - The title song of the album where it all began:

Progressive Metal - I'm a bit of a prog nerd at heart. The opening track to the hauntingly beautiful Blackwater Park:

Symphonic Metal - Simply epic, although not epica:

Black Metal - I'll admit I'm not usually that fond of Black Metal since most of it has the sound quality of something that was recorded in a tumbledryer as opposed to a studio. Emperor has made me want to find more of this quality:

Technical Death Metal - What is there to say about Death? No really I can't think of anything, I'm speechless:

Enjoy :)

P.S. As a sidenote to the guys arguing about Slipknot, nobody likes elitists. You can be perfectly capable of not liking something whilst simultaneously not being a dick about it.

This one ---

Might not be the "classic" version, but one of my favorite from Metallica.

My roommate pointed out a serious deficiency in this thread...
Trick question. Lemmy is God. "Punk, metal, rock, I don't give a shit, play it loud and fuck your neighbor"

I gotta say Van Canto is pretty talented, it is funny as hell to see a metal band with no instruments save for a drum set.

That's a really old song (pre- Vulgar Display of Power) and you can't really give it as an example. And Black Sabbath are one of the fore fathers of metal, so of course they can't be symphony grade quality, that's like saying "Great, you discovered fire! Now make me a flamethrower"
So if it came out before Vulgar and before Pantera stopped being a glam outfit, it's not metal? WTF.

Sabbath are seen by many as THE definitive metal band. Which brings me back to my original point - it's not about how fast or skillfully you can play, but the attitude with which you play it.

I was listening to 'heavy metal' long before Pantera. 'Vulgar' was not the first heavy metal album so I'm not sure why you dismiss anything before it. Slayer were doing similarly brutal metal a few years before Pantera. So were Judas Priest. The death metal scene was also kicking long before Pantera came along.

Megadeth - Peace Sells
A deep, heavy metal song that proved many people wrong about the 'metal-fan/head stereotype.' Well according to Wikipedia anyway. Besides, it has a sick bass-intro!
Pretty much this, +Tornado Of Souls.
And Hangar 18 ... maybe even Holy Wars

I read an article recently that said that the best way to tell if a band was truly great was if they could put out five solid albums in a row. And honestly, Iron Maiden's output from the self-titled LP up to Powerslave is pretty much total gold from beginning to end. I don't listen to metal anymore, mainly because there was a fairly limited amount of material that was both awesome and not-guilty-pleasure, but I defend Maiden to the death. One of the best bands of the 80s.

Also, I second your suggestion of "Hallowed Be Thy Name" as the standout of the golden age. One of the most moving and triumphant songs I've ever heard, regardless of genre.

When i listen to them, i am reminded of all the radio friendly rock bands rather than the gritty metal band feeling.

Even though Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath sold loads of albums and found lots of mainstream success, they still had that gritty and dirty heavy metal feeling, which slipknot never seemed to have.
I feel the same about their later stuff, but a lot of the old Ross Robinson produced stuff is raw and gritty as hell in my opinion:

That riff at 2.21 would be right at home on a Cannibal Corpse or Deicide album.

I find the lack of Lamb of God on this thread disturbing. Let me fix that:

Of course it is metal, I said it can't be judged by today's standards (war pigs that is), because it's a really old song released when metal was taking its baby steps and it's still better than slipknot will ever be. Anyway, this is getting really off-topic, so I'm going to stop posting about this.

There's so many I could post but this takes it for me at the moment. Post-black metal from Cork, Ireland. That opening riff chills me to the bone.
