Watched a video on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmTuGq1fP-w&feature=channel

After reading this article I was expecting a little more than the characters suffering a fit then logging out.

It makes me wonder how would World of Warcraft go out, if it ever came to that point.

Definitely a cool idea on how to pull the plug. Honestly, though, I thought the game died out a long while back. I had no idea it was still up and running, though since I stopped playing City of Villains I also stopped paying attention to the wild world of MMOs.

Much respect to the people running Matrix online for having the coolness and the humility to let it go down this way and letting people enjoy it for free.

World of Warcraft would go out by bringing on a real armageddon.

There's a Matrix Online? How come I never heard of this until now? Now I can't give it a go and them make fun of it :(. Speaking of which what is it like?

It was highly flawed but frankly had the greatest community I've ever seen in an MMO (I've played a lot), the grind was highly repetitive running the same basic mission plan over and over again and content was rather lacking (Though they did try to do something towards the end it was too little and too late)

The combat animations were the best in an MMO ever (Look at videos in youtube) and it will probably be a long time till anything can match up to that (I'm hoping SW:TOR can get close though)

And the city... it was mostly empty aside from the NPC spawns but it was truly amazing.

I don't think I've ever been more immersed in any other game either.

But the game only lasted as long as it did thanks to the community, and once some key central players started disappearing it had a cascade effect causing it to be crippled leading to the final downfall.

If it was always like it was on the last day the game probably would have lived a long time later. (Well they'd have a lot of subs but that's besides the point)

I'll definitely miss the game and the people associated with it.

I'm a little miffed that the ENDING ending was so lackluster, though. They could have shown every player a cinematic of the Matrix breaking down and tearing itself apart or somesuch, but instead every character just suffers a heart attack and dies. And then their players all are automatically logged out.

That would be Tabula Rasa.

The idea was unstoppable aliens would attack and wipe everyone out. It was something of a boob though as the unstoppable alien invasion was in fact beaten back by the players, which was awesome.
The game ended anyway, it just so happened that it got to go out on an emphatic victory rather than the Doomsday device.
... remind me never to fuck with Tabula Rasa players... They beat the developers at their own game? That is the definition of badass.

I wish all MMOs did that, actually.

Good for Sony to make the death of an MMO an event.

It's just a shame that it wasn't good enough to last, like most of Sony's MMORPGs...
You mean most MMO's in general, don't you? I rarely see anything outside of Oblivion and WOW that survives too long.

I don't think sony had any care in wanting to keep MxO alive any longer. The community it had pre-SOE was good, albeit most of it was people ganking others via hardline camping, but the loadouts were perfect. When sony came in with their upgrades, they screwed it up completely. They never even did anything to fix certain problems it had pre-SOE anyways.

In my honest opinion, if it was still in the hands of Monolith, it might have lived a little longer.

Being sold off to SOE was both a second chance and a death sentence for MxO. Nothing topped the first several months, but even knowing that underperforming in subs couldn't sustain that level, instead of trying to sort things out, Monolith/WBIE cut and ran. Still, SOE's underwriting the game was what kept it alive as long as it did. Double-edged sword the transition was.
