There has been a whole lot of hoo-haa about matt smith, as the latest choice for Dr.Who. I myself was never a big fan of the series, but did take an interest in the fans disturbance at the new actor. What I got out of it was that the fans really don't like change. David tennant was okay, but as I said, I never really became a fan, only recently did I take it upon myself to watch two seasons (both matt smith) and I have to say I found little to no problem. he truly characterizes that naive quality the doctor has, and when the scenes turn dark, he portrays them well too.

Indeed, the only problem with the later seasons is the writing. I felt it difficult to truly be immersed in the show, and the plot and character arcs did nothing to help. (though it must be said that in a show where characters are constantly either meeting themselves, dying, rebirthing and transforming, you leave little room for character arcs.) Almost nothing happened in any episode that was relevant to the apparent sub-plot underlying the season, except in one or two jam-packed episodes before the finale.

Matt Smith is doing a good job, but that's really just my standpoint, can anyone provide me with a tangible argument against him?

Are people still taking issue with Matt Smith as The Doctor? That's news to me.

I've always really liked Matt Smith and as you said I think the problem is that he's been stuck with a lot of less than stellar scripts. Saying that though the series that's just finished was brilliant and I loved every single episode.

I also started with David Tennant, and I didn't like the change at all. That being said, Matt Smith is now my favorite. Especially with the changes that Moffat has made to The Doctor (inb4 shitstorm). Matt Smith pulls it off well, and he's my favourite Doctor.

I started with David Tennant as well but I find Matt Smith perfectly fine. He's a competent actor and does a perfectly fine job as doctor. I was a bit off put by the change but I adapted eventually.
If I have any issue with the later seasons it's with its writing as opposed to the Doctor. Moffat's handling of Doctor Who is a bit hit-or-miss for me. When he gets it right it's great but when he messes up (such as the finale to the 6th season) it's awful.

I myself, like many others, am a David Tennant fan. That said, Matt smith is doing a fine job. I was more prone to complain about Amy or River Song.

I think both Tennant and Smith are good in their own right. Tennants story lines were alot more "fun" but that aspect of him was merely covering up the extreme sadness and desperation that was the characters true form. Smith's doctor seems to have shed that baggage and though he is a LOT more manic then his previous incarnation he lacks the intensity that has been a hallmark of the doctor since the Eccelston.

Season 6 is probably Smiths best season, gotta admit it was pretty epic. In 5 he or Moffat seemed to have a bit of trouble hitting their stride and it is evident by some awkward moments during that run. Season 7 seems to have gotten off to a rough start but that could simply be because we dont know what the overall arc is yet.

I loved the fact that people came in on a franchise way way way into it... ignored everything that had come before (including the actual premise of the changing character...) and got up in arms over that...!

The Doctor is meant to change... that was the point...! And the new incarnation is meant to be different enough that it is like a reboot! It's not like James Bond where the same character is meant to be played by all, they are MEANT to be different! :/

And I don't even like Dr Who! :S

Really, I actually thought this season has been the worst out of all the Smith seasons. So many cringeworthy, awkward moments (Amy's 'speech' in A Town Called Mercy, the end of the Power of Three and Asylum of the Daleks). And the sending off of Amy and Rory could've been done better, but it was OK.

I really like Matt Smith as the Doctor, as well as Tennant and Eccleston. Moffats old episodes like Blink and Silence in the Library are brilliant, but the newer ones fell kinda flat and formulaic.

And I also thought people had stopped whinging about Matt Smith, thought it was just a reaction to change, any change.

I'm a Tennant fan forever but I don't have any issues with Smith. He's an excellent Doctor let down by some shoddy writting.

There is only one Doctor.

That man is Sylvester McCoy.........
You're crazy man.

Jon Pertwee all the way.
WTF is this crap? Pertwee is good, I admit, but be honest with yourself: he doesn't hold a candle to Baker. None of the others do, really. :D

OT: I dunno, I like Matt Smith as the Doctor. I think I might even like him a bit more than Tennant. I mean, at least Smith has had a good companion for more than one season. :p

I think both Matt and David both played the doctor extremely well, so many people thought that Matt was to replace David, but it's all part of the whole Doctor Who world, the doctor is regenerated, I remember when the 9th doctor (Christopher Eccleston) was running around and he was the more not-so-fun doctor, but he did it well, and when the doctor was re-born as David, I remember him checking his hair and saying 'Oh god I'm a women' xD

In all, the doctor is bound for change, but the past three doctor (Most of Doctor Who I've watched those three were the doctors) have played it very well and I do like the change, stops the character becoming stale. It's just the his companions change all the time :)

Can I place my vote for Christopher Eccleston? He was the first Dr Who I watched.

Also, it's funny how whatever actor you first saw in a role tends to remain your favourite. James Bond works like this as well. I guess it's because everything is new and fresh when you see it for the first time, so it seems that bit better.

I like Tennant more but I have no problem with Smith most of the time. I cannot take him seriously when he tries to be angry. To me, he come across as a 6 year old who had dresed in his dad's clothes shouting 'I'm a big boy now!'.

That said I think the writing has been letting him down. RTD was in no way perfect but since Moffat took over the show has just been plain boring. None of them paying attention to what has been said in past episodes (especialy about how time travel works) Amy and Rory were as irritating as a cheese grater to the balls and I will not start on how much I hate River Song as I will be typing for days. Lets just say I want someone to kill her again. With fire. And then take the burnt corpse and put it in a wood chipper. And take the chips and throw them into a black hole.

I don't remember people not liking Matt Smith, just not wanting Tennant to go. And I'll echo what seems to be the predominant opinion, Matt Smith's good, but Moffat is less so.

Matt Smith is a fine doctor. The last series has been a pile of wank (Bar, perhaps, Dinosaurs on a Space Ship) and as a result the assumption is Smith cannot act.

That is all.

The Doctor is meant to change, but in this case Moffat seems to have erased much of the gravitas was present in his previous 2 incarnations. I loved how in the first two he was such a tortured soul, he did afterall condemn his own race to extinction. This regeneration touches on none of that though probably for the better as it was worked over quite thoroughly and could use a rest. I do hope that it is revisited down the line though and now that he has lost the Ponds reverts to a slightly darker persona.

Peter Cushing, lol I could not sit through his version of the doctor. Its awful lol.

Overall I prefer Tennant, but I still love Smith, and there are some things I think he does better. The Doctor has a dark history yes, but I think it's Smith who really gets across why, even after everything he's been through, the Doctor still does what he does... because he finds it fun!
