I think when left to the imagination, the experience of playing a game is increased hundredfold, and the only reason I play videogames is because I'm too lazy to think of my own concepts for games.
Sounds to me like you're already started on your own concept for a game. A video game, in fact. See, I think part of the problem here is that, with video games, certain guidelines have to be set for the game to function properly. What you need is a video game that you can play with your friends that you can drastically alter whenever you feel like. Sort of like a Gary's Mod of board games, if that makes any sense.

In any case, as far as I'm concerned, there are plenty of things that are better than video games. The reason I play them isn't so much because I think they're the best things ever, but because I'm an addict. I'm unhappy with my life and video games are accessible, so I use them to pretend my problems don't exist. I'd prefer to spend that energy on one of my other, more constructive hobbies (like art), but games are much less physically and mentally demanding.

As for why I don't play board games, it's mostly for the same reasons you don't. I've been trying to get my friends to play go for years.

I've played some great turn based strategy games on boards before. The only problem is that pieces tend to get lost or broken, not to mention that they take a lot longer to play.

I like playing them with my friends who aren't interested in video games. Me and a couple good friends keep meaning to whip out the 3rd edition D&D board and at my friends birthday we spent an hour or two playing Apples to Apples, Flux and Talisman. (Disclaimer: Apples to Apples and Flux are card games)
Apples to Apples is hilarious with just about any group of people.

It really gets hilarious when people stop giving a shit about what the other person would prefer and you just toss in something completely contradictory to the Adjective Card. Getting everyone to read out all the submitted cards can be a good laugh.

I wish I had friends who enjoyed Tabletop games. I really do. I fight tooth and nail with two of them just to play a small game of Heroscape.

I would gladly play Risk with you OP. I love that game, and it was always better when you took liberties with the rules and made it your own game. How I miss those days...

That game is always fun. Most of the time my friends and I say to hell with the rules and someone randomly draws the adjective and whoever puts down the funniest noun wins.

People don't want to play board games because they play Monopoly and Risk. Both games are over a thousand years before they end. The problem is that the most iconic board games are also some of the worst. Carcassonne, it is the way to go.

That generally is how we play as well. No one really say it though, it just happens. Ever play Flux? It's unqiue, to say the least.

Chess is the shit.
Used to go, get a couple of drinks and sit outside the bar playing chess for hours. I haven't done that in so long. Maybe this weekend now that got some time off.

One problem with tabletop games: they require socialization, something I rarely do unless absolutely necessary.

I've never finished a game of Monopoly because, no matter who I played with, there was always an argument over something irrelevant. Or because "someone cheated".
