The Kentucky senate is trying to approve a state bill that says if a sitting US Senator leaves office before an election, the governor's choice of replacement will come down to a list of 3 picked by the party of the departing senator. McConnell fervently supports this bill.

In effect, McConnell is making sure he's not replaced by a Democrat if, for some reason, he left office before his next election.

While this is bad, this is way better than Arizona trying to make the state legislature the sole determinant of federal senators sent by the state

I think this should be rejected if for no other reason than it formalises parties and party powers in the governmental system in ways that are probably best avoided.

I mean, this doesnt sound like the most outlandish thing in the world, so can someone explain to me why this would be a bad thing, if it were to pass in Mitch's favour?

If voters voted for a Republican, and that senator then left office, surely it then makes sense to replace that person with another Republican, right?

If the Republican senator were to leave office, and they were replaced with someone from a completely different political party, would that not be wrong?

Same goes for vice versa.

Generally, you should have a by-election, or whatever its called in the US. The member representing you should be representing you, not what some other people think should be representing you.

I totally misread the article.

I was under the impression that the current rules allowed the Governor to appoint a successor, and this successor was from whatever party they wanted. So they could replace an R with a D, if they felt like it. I thought this bill was to ensure that the replacement, under those rules, should be from the same party.

Yeah. This sucks.

I feel like a total idiot, now.
