Basically, I was thinking of buying Mass Effect 2 but have no idea what it will be like, having never played the first one. So what is it like, is it good, bad or just one of thoose mediocre games you always seem to get theese days.

I haven't played it, but I guarantee that it is exceptionally made.

However whether you like it or not, that depends on personal preference.

Great game, I would strongly recommend beating the first one then playing the second, seeing as your choices and character carry over. It is much more fulfilling and makes a lot more sense that way. Even so, I believe you would enjoy it regardless of beating the first one. However, I recommend beating the first game before you play it.

Bioware can do no wrong in my eyes.

However, if you don't like dialogue, and lots of it, then you need not apply.
Pretty much this. It never fails to sadden me when I see people bash Mass Effect for "Too much talking, not enough shooting!" That's the POINT.

Having been out in the UK for 19 minutes now, I'm off to make Tesco sell me a copy...

It worked for Fable 2 anyway...

EDIT: It did not work... :(

Well, if you played through the first game, you really will get more out of Mass Effect 2. However, a friend of mine started playing ME2 fresh, and has still enjoyed it (however, she didn't get a lot of the nostalgic moments in the game).

The only thing that I would warn anyone about is the text. Okay, so I know that this is the crazy future of 2010, but not everyone has an HD TV. However, more and more programers tend to make the in-game text smaller and smaller.... Earrrgh!! This was a total game-breaker for me in Dead Rising... and now Mass Effect 2 is causing mucho eye-strain. (BTW, I am planning on getting a hd tv soon, but STILL! How unthoughtful!)

Oh, and to any who DO play ME2. Take a good look at the ship's AI, EDI. Vagina Deathstar. o_O

If you haven't played the first one, you're going to miss out on a lot. A lot of the dialogue is a call back to the first game. Most side quests involve returning characters and the game constantly references the events of Mass Effect. It's great if you've played Mass Effect, but you're probably going to feel a bit lost if you haven't. Though maybe I'm wrong.

Though that's just the story. The combat is still great regardless of you having played the first, obviously. Whether or not you should jump right into the sequel depends on how much you care about the story.

Yeah, the tiny text has been the bane of my existence this gen. It's obviously not just ME2 (especially since I'll never play it. Hate shooters and I put Bioware on notice after the let down that is DA:O). But game designers were just a little too quick to jump on the "everyone should have an HD TV so lets make our text teeny tiny" fad. Sorry, most of us don't yet have an HD TV and even if we did, consoles are not PCs.

With a PC the user generally sits about 50-75cm away from the screen. Small text = appropriate.

Console users are generally on their couch a few meters away from the TV. Small text = too small.
I hadn't thought about that, but I bet you are right. The primary focus was on PCs. Makes sense now.

And you found Dragon Age a let down? Really?! How so? 0.0

I'd suggest you buy the first one, as it will be 10 dollars, and will give you a really good idea whether or not you'll like the 2nd one.

Plus the 2nd is a continuation of the first, without playing it i expect its like sitting down and watching return of the jedi without seeing any other starwars flick.
