The universe has been bugging me lately. Thoughts about how the world started and why it started have leaked into my mind. Then thoughts of death have leaked in too. During these days I have understood that we are born to die, so what's the point of living (I am not suicidal because I am afraid of the unknown)?

Hoo boy. Um alright. We are not born to die so to speak. Everything that has life has an expiration date. Plants, animals, bacteria, you name it. To be honest for the first 25 years of our life or so (maybe more) the human body is all about growing. We reach our peak and then it starts to break down. However the "meaning" of life or "Point" of living is too subjective for me to define.

I believe that everyone finds their own meaning in life. Some meanings are very similar and some aren't. But there is no one meaning that can apply to everyone. If you wanted me to be cold and scientific I'd say that the point to is to be born, find a mate, pass on the genes, and then do whatever. But we live in a time where it isn't exactly necessary for all humans to keep populating.

But I digress. I think what I'm trying to say is that you have to find YOUR meaning in life. What you want to do with it and what it has in store for you.

To me, happiness is measured in personal success. That is my meaning in life. See how far you can go, and if you can go farther than everyone else, then be happy about it. Nobody likes a wangster.

I honestly don't care. I don't believe in any deity or grand scheme or anything spiritual. Yes, we live to breed and pass on our genes buuuuuut that doesn't mean it's our only purpose. In fact, we don't need one. Do what you want. If you want a purpose in life, let it be 'to have fun'; just enjoy your life, do things you enjoy, make something of yourself, be ambitious and have fun. If you want to be remembered then do something to be remembered for. If you want kids, have kids.
If there is a higher power, I'm sure he/she/it will be satisfied if you just make the most out of your life

There is no point? We just happened and after a while we will all be gone.
Why are peoples egos so big they need to pretend we have any sort of purpose?

Live till you die. Don't dwell on the past or the future imo. I hate the argument of creation vs evolution. Neither can be proven and it really doesn't make any difference on how we live our every day lives.

As for the future. No one knows what will happen to the world tomorrow so its best just like how ever you want. If you want to try to be remembered for changing the world then it is up to you to make that possible. If you just want to have a family and be a good provider then go for it. Fill your hole with whatever completes you. For example, I like to fill my emptiness with more knowledge. I want to change the world. So that is why I am doing my best to get a good degree from college.

As for death. Anything can happen. Just remember at any time something could kill us. We are a very fragile species. You just have to worry about yourself. That is why I don't like wasting time and strive to continuously better myself. I don't know when my time is up, but I will be a better person when that time comes.

The point of living, is living your life in such a manner that you can always happily accept it's end. Nothing to regret, nothing missed, every opportunity taken, lived to the fullest.

For me, that reason is to have as much fun as humanly possible. If I'm stuck in this reality, might as well enjoy as much of it was I can, right?

I feel we should bring artificial intelligence into the discussion, a computer program can be created to appear alive, and yet it does not 'live'. I think that life is as @FirstToStrike says; about happiness and in turn wanting.

A very smart AI program can appear to think and act alive, but to be motivated by want and happiness, as though those are it's home/default states to always go back to are only present in living things - for now.

Perhaps humanity will make life from scratch and it will have wants and desires to gain happiness all it's own. I sometimes think that happiness is perhaps a feeling of home, and who knows as CrashBang mentions, if there is a higher power, perhaps a truer happiness exists outside of life.
I agree that we don't need some grand purpose. as for children, some individuals leave behind inventions and ideas as their gift to humanity. The best child you can give is yourself!

I would say it's the other way round. Personal success is measured by how happy you are. That's my meaning of life. I'd much rather be happy than successful any day.

Point of life is to reproduce, really. We're just a large bunch of replicating molecules.

EDIT: Ninja'd. Knew someone else would post that.

OT: To be honest with you, none of us can give you the meaning to life, because its a very personal sort of thing. Ultimately, it comes down to living your life, setting goals for yourself, and doing all you can to achieve those goals, no matter how trivial. Now, some of us, like me, find that religion helps. In my case, being a Christian, the meaning to life is figuring out Gods will and following it.

Now, before anyone flames this post, don't get me wrong, I'm not promoting my religion or bashing others. You believe what you believe, and in all honesty, people tend to need to believe in SOMETHING, even if its something simple. And I'm not saying people NEED religion specifically. What you believe is your business, and its no business of mine to judge you for it. But, religion CAN give some of us a guiding hand to help us find meaning in our lives. Others find that personal goals are enough. Whatever gives you meaning, hold onto it. Even if it happens to be love for another person.

I think we can all say that we've either thought about this very question at least once, or have either felt sure enough or not cared enough to not think about it.

Whatever the case, meaning or not, life is worth living, and you are the one who ultimately steers your life. Sure, there is plenty of outside influence, but its YOU who decides whether to stand there and let life take you where it wills, or to drive forward on your own. We can't give you the answers, and not just because a lot of us don't have the answers ourselves.

You're the only one who can find meaning in your own life.
